Streetz Ahead are now based at Alexandra Primary School two days a week. We provide children with opportunities to explore and develop a deeper understanding in physical and mental health. The project is called BASE.
The BASE (Body and Soul Education) – will provide children and young people access to whole-body education and learning towards becoming physically and mentally fit for life. Through mentoring, play, therapy, self care, mindfulness, movement, dance and meditation, the BASE will provide preventative and restorative measures in a safe, nurturing and engaging way, to maximize every child’s capability.
Children can go to the BASE space throughout the day to talk about how they are feeling with the BASE team. At Alexandra, we have a BASE Supervisor that works to provide the children a safe space to talk about mental health.
Why is BASE useful?
We all have good days and bad days. Every day, we face challenges and new situations.
This can trigger many emotions and sometimes, we do not know how to deal with how we are feeling. BASE offers a safe space for the school community to talk through how they are feeling and help find ways to be able to cope with life’s many challenges.
BASE is there to build confidence and self-esteem through different approaches, tailored to the needs of each individual.
What does BASE do?
The BASE team work with children one-to-one or in small groups, giving regular support for pupils who need it.
Children can also book a short appointment to talk about any problems or worries they have – this is called Touching BASE.
How does BASE work with adults?
BASE provides support and advice for parents and carers, as well as teachers and school staff. Phone the school office and leave a message for the BASE team if you would like support.
BASE always gets agreement from parents or carers. They also meet with parents and carers regularly to keep them updated and make sure they are involved from the start.
“It has been fantastic having a BASE wellbeing mentor as part of our school team. We have been able to refer some of our most vulnerable children for support around issues such as emotional regulation, identification of triggers, confidence and resilience building, as well as every day difficulties such as navigating friendships. Children have reported that the BASE mentor room is a safe space for them to share their worries in a way that they would not be able to do so with school staff. BASE has been able to, therefore, assist us in building relationships between the children, home and school. Our BASE mentor has become an asset to our school community.”
