URGENT - SCHOOL CLOSURE UPDATE

Dear Parents and Carers, As you are aware, school leaders were informed by Haringey Council last Friday evening (16 April), that it was necessary to close the school for an initial period of three days (Monday 19th-Wednesday 21st April). Following further ongoing discussions with the Council since Friday, throughout the weekend and over the past two days, we have to advise you that the school will not now reopen until next Monday morning (26 April). The decision to close the school was made by the Council as lead, containing dust and residue, was discovered on site following an inspection of works that took place over the Easter break. The Council, as corporate landlord, had embarked on a much-needed project to upgrade the windows. During the works, historic lead paint on the windows was disturbed. On discovery, the Council has acted on a precautionary basis so as to control potential exposure to paint dust containing lead. As a consequence, a deep clean of the affected areas was undertaken by environmental specialists Environtec yesterday (Monday 19 April). Follow up testing will be taking place to ensure all the lead containing dust and debris has been removed, before pupils and staff can return to school next Monday (26 April). The length of the closure of the school is necessary, to allow a deep clean of the school and rigorous follow-up testing. The Council’s director of Public Health has advised that the risk to health from any possible exposure for staff or pupils is low, but we will continue to ensure risks are minimised. Remote education will continue via Google Classroom and Tapestry for the remainder of this week. URGENT - SCHOOL CLOSURE

17th April 2021 Dear Parents & Carers, We have been informed by the Haringey Health and Safety team that school must remain closed for an initial period of three days, Monday 19th - Wednesday 21st April, following an inspection of works that took place over the Easter break. The school was only notified of the issue on Friday afternoon (16th April) and the need for closure only confirmed on Friday evening, hence the reason for this late notification to families. We understand the inconvenience that this causes for everyone and we are working tirelessly with different Haringey departments as we seek a speedy resolution to the problem. CHANGES TO DROP OFF AND COLLECTION

CHANGES TO DROP OFF AND COLLECTION From Monday 19th April we are making a few changes to how we manage drop off of children in the morning and collection in the afternoon. The reason for the changes are to help the smoother flow at both ends of the day and also because we are moving again to having nursery provision for the whole day. In the morning, gates will be opened at 8:45, not before as has happened previously. Children will not be having their temperature checked in the morning when they arrive which will allow a quicker flow of children into school. Morning gates will be locked at 8:55. Children arriving after this time will need to go to the late gate, which is at the main entrance. At the end of the day gates will be opened at 3:10, not 5 minutes earlier as has been the case this term. Afternoon gates will lock at 3:20. Please be prompt when collecting your child. If you are late for collection you may be charged a fee. Year 4 and reception children, after Easter will be using a different gate to the one they are currently using. Year 1, reception and year 4 will have slightly different start times. Stars of the Week

The stars of the week for Costa Rica class are: Chloe Antink - For always doing the right thing, great listening and amazing progress in her work. Alvaro Ramos Grageda- For always being ready, great listening and showing amazing progress. Damla Mehmedova- she is the reading star this week , for wonderful reading, and for keeping her journal updated. Bolivia stars of the week are: Cezary, for perseverance and a massive improvement in Maths and in his attitude to work. Evelyn, for being considerate of others and always working hard since the start of term. Argentina stars are Ali and Harley, for consistently working hard and trying their best across all subjects. Nicaragua stars of the week are Jordon and Brayan. They received them for coming back to school and working hard in every subject and always having a positive attitude. Mexico stars of the week are Nabiha and Ollie, for achievement over the whole term in lockdown and in school.
Year 4 - Design & Technology

For our Design & Technology this half term, we look at structures, specifically towers. Our challenge in this lesson was to build a stand alone, stable tower as tall as we could. All we had to make it was masking tape, newspapers and scissors. We had fun and learnt a lot about how structures work. Well done Year 4, we needed to show resilience and perseverance!
Marble Treat in Nicaragua Class

We were very clever in Nicaragua Class last week and managed to have our Marble Treat afternoon to coincide with our Red Nose Day. Here we are enjoying ourselves in our marble treat. For part of the afternoon, we decorated our very own scratch masks to link with our super hero theme for the day. Do you like them?
Letting Go and Moving On

As part of our focus on well-being at the school, our theme in PSHCE last week was self-efficacy. For this, we focused on finding the super hero within us and thinking about our special super hero powers. To link with this, we created our very own super heroes. We agreed that everyone at Alexandra Primary are super heroes in their own special way.
Art Ambassadors at Alexandra

Art Ambassadors at Alexandra We have now appointed Art Ambassadors at our school and here they are - seven children from Year 6. Their first role was to have input into what they study in the their last term at the school. Ms Kennedy, our Creative Arts Lead, met with them yesterday to discuss: - what they have enjoyed doing in art at school and what work they are proudest of; - what they would like to do more of in their last term at school; - any ideas for what else we could do for art in the school. They had a great discussion and ended up steering their art learning in the summer to exploring sketching of figures and landscapes, working on sculpture using clay and also exploring technological ways of creating art. We are looking forward to seeing what their art work will be like.

Children In Need

Today is Red Nose Day. We were very excited to dress up as superheroes and share our superpowers with the class. Families donated money to dress up and for a red nose, to raise money for Comic Relief.
Stars of the Week

Cuba Marley and Martha - Star of the Week and Reading Star Costa Rica Anna for always being a role model, focused on her work and never giving up. Yannis for being more persistent and persevering during his tasks. Kaylan is a star reader for completing his reading journal. UKS2 Although Ezana has not been here, he has been proactive all week with completing work online and all throughout remote learning.

Year 3 stars of the week for being considerate to other children and adults are: Anhar, Oliver, Amelia and Adam. The year 4 stars of the week for being considerate to others are: Victoria, Nihal, Hayden and Naima.
Year 5 - Experiences of Lockdown

In year 5 we have been reflecting on our experiences of lockdown and considering what we are looking forward to in the future. We created a tree by using brown leaves to represent lockdown experiences we are leaving behind us, green leaves for what we are looking forward to in the future. Finally, we created sun flowers to represent our growth and the changes that have taken place. As part of our mindfulness lessons we created pieces of art using pastels and pens. We practiced some breathing exercises before letting our pen flow freely on our paper and then coloured the patterns.
World Book Day - 2021

This year for World Book Day, our theme was 'Fairy tales with a twist'. Whether we were at home or at school, we dressed up as our favourite fairy tale characters to celebrate our day. Remember to use your £1 digital book tokens and enjoy reading a range of lovely books.
Bubble 4 - round up of the week

In Science this week, we learned the difference between inheritance, evolution and adaptation. We investigated how cactus plants have adapted to suit their environment. In Geography we have begun our topic on Renewable Energy. We built on our learning in Science about renewable energy sources and have learned what natural resources are and how we use them. "We have fossils that give us oil, we have water to drink, we have minerals, rocks and jewels to make things with, we have forest to use to build things from wood and to make paper." - Amari. We drew and labelled cross sections of Britain to show how different natural resources are used. Check out Zerei and Amari's beautiful examples. In Art we have used all of the painting skills we have learned this term to create our own watercolour masterpieces, inspired by Alexandra Palace! We then reflected on our work and learning in Art. Here is what Emmanuel had to say: "What I like about painting is you can do anything you want. I found the painting easy because you just paint around what you have drawn. I found drawing the outline difficult. It was very challenging!" We have been reading the Villain's Version in DR and Writing. This looks at traditional fairy tales from the villain's perspective. We have been re-examining the story of Hansel and Gretel and getting the Witch's side of the story. Abdou has written an excellent missing poster for Hansel and Tye has written a fantastic setting description about the gingerbread house. Year 5 - ART

In art this week we have been exploring seasons. The children had a challenge to draw a tree which symbolized all four seasons; autumn, winter, spring and summer. Max produced this beautiful piece of art. which shows all the four seasons in great detail. Well done Max.
Art - exploring different artists

In Art each week, as a school we are exploring the work of a different artist. This week, we learn about Shantell Martin. She is a British visual artist best known for her large scale, black-and-white drawings. She performs many of her drawings for a live audience. Born in Thamesmead, London, Martin lives and works in New York. Shantell Martin has explored the question, ‘Who are you?’, and usually just creates work with a simple black pen. She has recorded a TED Talk entitled, ‘How drawing can set you free.’ The whole school looked at her work and then created their own black and white journeys. Here are some creations from Year 4. Year 1 - Victorian Day

Victorian Day Cuba and Costa Rica class have been exploring Victorian school days this term. They identified the differences and similarities between school life in the past and in the present and how things have changed. They have also enjoyed dressing up and getting into character! We hope that no one was injured or remained on the Dunce chair for long!

Year 2 - Writing

We are being so mature in Year 2 and have linked our book to ourselves and our strengths and weaknesses. This can be difficult to discuss and requires us to be honest and open about things we are good at and find easy and things we are not and find tricky. Everyone in Year 2 has been so impressive and open in their writing this week. Well done Team 2.
Letter from Caroline Schloss, Chair of Governors

Dear Parents and Carers Firstly, I hope you and your family are all safe and coping as well as possible during these very difficult times. On behalf of the Governing Body I wanted to contact you all to give our support during this difficult time we find ourselves in. At Alexandra, we strongly believe in the value of education and school life in shaping our children’s development and giving them opportunities in life. As such, we are devastated by the huge amount of lost learning and social interaction in 2020. All the staff have worked really hard in the Autumn Term to make up for lost time. Again, on 4th January, we entered another school lockdown. There was nothing we wanted less but obviously there was no alternative at that point. During lockdown, our dedicated staff continue to work full time, sometimes from home, doing what they can to support our children and families in lots of different ways. We know it’s a big challenge for the whole school community, but we are here to help each other and succeed together. When we went into lockdown for the first time last year, I think that everyone’s main priority was to get through that period, mainly by making sure that everyone kept as safe and strong as possible. This time, however, schools were given specific instruction on the expectations for ‘remote attendance’ and ‘remote learning’. We are therefore still responsible for accounting for every child’s learning and attendance, even while we are in lockdown. Thanks to significant planning and work during the Autumn Term and during the Christmas break, we were ready, with only a few hours of warning on 4th January, to continue to deliver high quality education for your child and provide meaningful teaching and learning, as well as pastoral care where necessary. I hope that you will see and appreciate the work that has been put in to the remote learning provision as well as providing in school lessons for certain children. I do appreciate that whilst the school staff have all put in an enormous effort to achieve this home -learning does require an enormous effort also from our children’s parents and carers. You have been asked to fulfil a role that a year ago you would never have dreamt you would be asked to do. We do understand that you are not trained teachers. Please keep in touch with the school and let us know if you are unsure about expectations or are struggling. The knowledge and skills we teach will be needed when our children move to secondary school and beyond, and we now need to try and achieve a period of effective remote learning (at home and in some cases in school) using the time wisely and working together for the good of every child. I completely understand the many different challenges you may be facing: lack of technology, lack of confidence with technology, juggling working commitments with home schooling, managing personal issues within the family – the list goes on. Despite this, I am delighted to see the participation in home learning achieved in the last month and amazed by what the children (with support from parents) have achieved. The skills being developed across the curriculum, but also in communication and the use of technology will benefit us all for many years to come. I hope that you are not stressing yourselves out too much. The bigger picture is that we must all stay safe and healthy. You can only do what you can do and it’s important that we don’t lose sight of that. At school we are all looking forward to the time when we can welcome the children back into school and their normal routine and we are putting a lot of thought into plans for that time and already planning how we will be supporting the children’s future learning and well-being. I am a huge believer in the children’s resilience and I am confident that our school community will come out of this pandemic stronger in many ways. Thank you for the tremendous effort from children, parents and school staff to achieve this. We can, and will, come through this difficult time together. Keep well. Bubble 3 - Art

We have been enjoying our art this half term. Last week, we explored chiaroscuro (the treatment of light and shade in drawing and painting) by drawing apples in torch light using charcoal. This week, we explored drawing trees, then we created trees with masking tape and then used water colour paints to fill our pages with colour. Next week, we will be drawing birds and then cutting them out to sit in our trees. Our final creations will be a mixed media collage. We are looking forward to bringing it all together.
Rights Respecting School - Right of the Week

Rights Respecting School –Right of the week In circle time each week your children have been discussing their rights as we are a Rights Respecting School. Here is one that they have discussed recently. Please take time to discuss the article and related questions with your child. Article 8 – Protection and Preservation of Identity Every child has the right to an identity. Governments must respect and protect that right, and prevent the child’s name, nationality or family relationships from being changed unlawfully. Have a think about the questions below and discuss them with your family. Remember to respect other people’s opinions even if you disagree. Q1: Why does your personal identity matter? Q2: There are lots of things that help to make up our identity such as date of birth, name, nationality, gender, faith, our appearance, personal talents and abilities. If you had to highlight only ONE part of your identity that is most special to you, what would it be? Can you explain why? Q3 (KS1): How would you describe your identity to somebody who does not know you? Try using a mixture of words and pictures. Q3 (KS2) : Government must protect the legal identity of children. That means that your name, nationality and the family you are part of can only change if a court agrees to this. Are your name, nationality and family special to you? Can you explain why this matters? Q4: During October we talked about Black History Month. Why is it important to celebrate racial and ethnic diversity. What links can you see with the idea of identity?

Children's Mental Health Week

Children’s Mental Health Week This week is Children’s Mental Health Week. The theme this year is Express Yourself so we have been expressing our feelings and emotions through art, writing, drama and music. On Tuesday we expressed ourselves through writing and designed our own ideal desert island that reflected our personalities. Have a look at Amari’s plan for his island. How would you create your island to express your identity? On Wednesday we drew our feelings. How are you feeling today? What colours, patterns or shapes would express how different parts of your body feel? Isaiah said he really enjoyed expressing himself this way and I can definitely tell from looking at his fantastic work! On Thursday we expressed ourselves through movement and facial expressions. Can you tell which emotions we are conveying just by looking at our facial expressions?
Bubble 4 - What we learnt this week....

Writing In History we have been learning about WW2 so in writing this week we portrayed newspaper journalists and wrote newspaper articles about the Blitz in September 1940. We learned how to write an eye-catching headline, how to use direct and indirect speech to make our report more effective and have included some fantastic vocabulary and literary features including: retaliation, commend, annihilate, sacrifice, glass glittering like deadly diamonds and devastation was a cloak that hung over everything. Science This week, in Science, we learned about renewable and non-renewable energy sources. We learned that non-renewable energy comes from burning coal and fossil fuels which are bad for the environment and will eventually run out. Renewable resources, however, come from nature and so they never run out. We learned that the 4 kinds of renewable energy are wind, water, sun and geothermal energy. Wind energy is harnessed by wind turbines. We had a lot of fun making our own models of wind turbines! We used oil pastels (but it also works with crayons) and watercolours to make these fantastic pieces of art. The oil in the pastels (or the wax in crayons) resists the water in the paint so the colour doesn’t stick in these places, like magic!
Bubble 2 - Handwriting

Tariq has shown a great improvement in his writing. He has been able to use conjunctions, write interesting facts and take notes on Seaman William Brown. We are very proud of how he is taking pride in his presentation as well. Well done Tariq.
Year 6 - Art

Year 6 explored the art work of Yayoi Kusama who is a Japanese artist and sometimes called ‘the princess of the polka dots’. Although she makes lots of different types of art – paintings, sculptures, performances and installations – they all have one thing in common – DOTS!
Year 4 - Maths Update

Year 4 have been learning the column method of subtraction. We are doing so well. Everyone is trying so hard - drawing (and crossing out) place value counters to represent their subtractions and then carefully laying out their work in columns. Children's Mental Health Week - Bubble 1

This week is Children's Mental Health Week. We started the week off expressing ourselves through words and pictures. We revealed some facts about ourselves in circle time. What is one fact about yourself that you think others may not know? We also imagined that we were stranded on a desert island and have written and drawn how we would customise it to express our likes and personalities. How would you make your desert island reflect you?
Artwork - Blitz

Amazing artwork from Carina in El Salvador class. She has created a painting to capture the scenery during the Blitz.
Science - Electrical Insulators & Conductors

This week, in Science, we have been investigating electrical insulators and conductors. We made electrical circuits to check whether materials were insulators or conductors. An electrical conductor allows electricity to pass through so the light bulb would light up. However, an electrical insulator does not let electricity pass through, which means that the electricity won't reach the bulb so it won't light up. Tye and Sienna showed that they were true scientists with super enquiry skills. Tye wondered whether his watch was a conductor or insulator so he decided to put it in the circuit and see for himself. He discovered that the metal part of his watch was a conductor! Sienna tested her earrings and found out that they were conductors as well.

Safer Internet Day

Over the years, Safer Internet day has become a landmark event in the Online safety domain. Now, more than ever, we realise the importance of keeping safe online. We will be celebrating this on day Tuesday 9th February 2021. Safer Internet day has grown beyond its traditional geographic zone and is now celebrated in approximately 170 countries worldwide. From cyberbullying to social networking to digital identity, Safer Internet day aims to raise awareness of the emerging online issues and current concerns. Children's Mental Health Week

From 1-7 February 2021, Alexandra Primary School will be taking part in Children’s Mental Health Week. This is a yearly event, organised by the children’s mental health group Place2Be. The theme for this year’s week is “Express Yourself”. According to Place2Be, “self-expression is about communicating your individuality. This can be through words, clothing and hairstyle, or through art forms such as writing, drawing, music and dance.” In circle time, the children will be exploring a different form of self-expression each day. Place2Be and Alexandra Primary School believe that “by expressing ourselves thoughtfully, we can better communicate, collaborate and build a community with others” especially in times of hardship and crisis.
Year 4 - literacy

In year 4, we have been reading The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl. Coco has created a wonderful story map including all the main parts of the story.
Computing - Bubble 4

This half term, in Computing, we have been learning about Online Safety. Zerei has created an amazing poster with useful tips and information to help others stay safe online. Have you learned anything new? Are you following this advice when you are doing your learning and other activities online?
History - Bubble 4

This half term, in History, we have been learning about World War 2. This week we learned about rationing and why it was necessary to deal with food shortages during the war. We looked at the type and amount of food that each person would get for a week. Have a look at Renaya’s ration book. Do you think this would be enough food for you? What foods would you miss?

In Art this week, Bubble 2 have been exploring the work of French artist Henri Matisse (1869-1954). Matisse used collage techniques such as: folding, tearing, crumpling, overlapping and layering to create amazing giant works of art. We were inspired by looking at his work (and even watching a video of him in action!) to create our own collages. Aren't they fantastic?!
Circle Time - Freedom of Association

During Circle Time the children will be discussing different articles as part of being a Rights Respecting School. Please take time to discuss the article and related questions with your children at home. Article 15 – Freedom of Association Every child has the right to meet with other children and to join groups and organisations, as long as this does not stop other people from enjoying their rights. Have a think about the questions below and discuss them with your family. Remember to respect other people’s opinions even if you disagree. What does association mean? Where have you heard that word before? What opportunities are there in school to associate with others? Being in lockdown means that we can’t associate with people the way we used to. What are the things you miss most? Why do you think that there isn’t actually a ‘Right to have friends’ in the charter? Do all the people in the clubs and groups you belong to have to be your friend?
School CLOSURE - Remote Learning from 4th January 2021

As you may have heard on the news or in the press, the Government have made the decision to move ALL London schools to remote learning until Monday, 18th January. This will now include Alexandra Primary School. Monday, 4th January is a planned closure for staff training and we will now use this day for organising the remote learning for our school community. As with the previous closure, the school will remain open for 'Keyworker' children for the core day ONLY. If you are a keyworker and would like to apply for a place for your child/ren in school, please email the school office before 10am on Monday at admin@alexprimary.haringey.sch.uk to request a place and please include evidence of your keyworker status. We will then be in contact with you. For all other families, the school will be CLOSED to all pupils and information on remote learning will be emailed to you on Monday, 4th January.

Year 4 have been exploring dance this term. We have listened to 'The Carnival of the Animals' and explored dance moves that different animals might do. Today, we performed our final dances as a group. The children did so well. Can you guess what animals we are?

Design & Technology - Year 6

In D&T, year 6 made their own fairground rides. They used a number of electrical components and knowledge of circuits to make these fantastic rides spin.

Design & Technology

The whole school is studying Design & Technology at Alexandra Primary this half term. D & T is so important in the modern world. We are trying to get the children to understand that everything that is human made in this world is designed. Year 6 have been delighting in their D & T studies so far. First, they looked at existing fairground rides and discussed how they might work. Then, they revisited their knowledge of electrical circuits. Finally, they designed and created their own carousels, doing some very accurate work to ensure that all their carousels spun around as they should. This week, they have been decorating them. Don't they all look fantastic? Well done, Year 6, for all your hard work. You have shown great resilience and perseverance in making sure they all actually work and that they all look fabulous.
Maths in Reception

Reception have been busy with number. We have been writing numbers, learning number rhymes, partitioning the number 6 and making repeating patterns. We love maths!
Diwali Celebration

We used clay to sculpt our own Diva Lamps that we then painted and decorated. We dressed up in traditional Indian dress and danced to Bollywood music to celebrate Diwali. We also created our own Rangoli patterns using different materials such as beans, rice and dry herbs.
Design & Technology - Year 4

Year 4 continued with their work on 'Vehicles' last week and each student created a working vehicle using card, cardboard, kebab sticks, art straws, masking tape, glue guns and cotton reels. They had to show great resilience and problem-solving and they all did fantastically well. The vehicles were powered by a sail this week.
Children In Need Day

To raise money for Children In Need we held a non-uniform day. We raised £400 for this wonderful cause.

Design & Technology - Year 4

We started our D & T topic today by exploring toy cars. We identified the wheels, axles and chassis. Then, we tried to make our own models using card, kebab sticks, art straws, wheels, masking tape and scissors. It was a little tricky. We found that we had to really persevere to get something that actually worked. Some of us were successful, others not so successful. However, we are going to be making more over the next few weeks. We are all excited about what we are going to create.
Black History Month

In Reception, during Black History Month, we studied the art work of Sonya Boyce. Sonya is an African Caribbean artist who was born in Islington. She has earned an OBE for her art work. She is also the very first black artist to represent Britain and will be going to an exhibition in Venice in 2021. She likes to work using paint, chalks, pastels and use photographs. We love her pictures because they portray interesting people and are full of colour and life. We copied them ourselves using chalks and pastels. We also used them to make jigsaw puzzles with. We also found out some information about her Caribbean heritage and talked about island life. We painted and tried some lovely Caribbean fruit.

Nursery - Whatever Next

We played a math's dice game in order to count and recognise the dot arrangement on a dice as well as playing turn taking games. We used construction materials to design and create space vehicles ships. We selected and used different colours and brush sizes to create alien and space pictures on a computer programme. On the CIN day, we looked at photos of ourselves and our friends. The children showed an interest in the lives of people that were familiar to them and commented on their own and other children's photographs.
Maths & Star of the Week - Year 1

This week Cuba class learnt all about Doubles and Arrays in Maths. We know that we have to use the same number twice in order to get the correct answer. An array represents this too. We had fund making our ladybirds! We are also learning how to count in 2's, 5's and 10's! You can test us on the go! Star Of The Week - Cuba Class - Arsen and Zayra Reading Star - Muhsin Costa Rica - Kayden and Alejandro Reading Star - Grace for taking an immense amount of pride in their learning and push their boundaries! We continue to learn about Retelling Stories using Pie Corbett in Literacy.
Year 6 Art - One Point Perspective

Last half term, Year 6's topic was 'One Point Perspective'. This is a tricky area of art, even for secondary school students, and Year 6 really did shine. We have just put up two display boards full of their amazing work. Year 6 used acrylic paints to create these paintings this year and this helped them to create paintings which are full of colour. The art journey followed its usual course. First, they discovered one point perspective art. Then, they explored how to create one point perspective art. Next, they designed their final painting. Finally, they created their art work. These are now up on our walls and all students are enjoying their wonderful work. Well done Year .
Year 2 Portraits in the style of Picasso

Last half term, Year 2 did some fantastic work on portraits. Their art journey took them through exploring charcoal, using chalk pastels to create colour wheels and then finally creating their own portraits. They then explored the surreal portraits of Picasso before they designed and created their own pieces based on this. Their art work certainly brighten up our staircases and we thought we should share them with you. Well done Year 2.
Year 3 Egyptian Death Masks

Last half term, Year 3 did some wonderful art work based on their topic of Ancient Egypt. They made Egyptian Death Masks. As usual in art, they first discovered what Egyptian Death Masks were, then they explored using mod roc to create letters of their name, then they designed their own death mask, then they created their final piece out of masks, mod roc and paint. It was a messy business but, I think you will agree, worth it for the creations that were made. Well done Year 3 - your work is fantastic.
Black History Month

KS2 did some amazing work during Black History Month. Last week, we put up displays in the top hall to show all our wonderful work - from masks, to poetry, to diary entries, to timelines, to PHSCE work on racism and Black Lives Matter. The depth of work was fantastic.
Year 4 - Remembrance Day - 11th November

On Friday, the whole school did reading and writing for Remembrance Day. In reading, we all explored poetry about World War I. In Year 4, we explored 'In Flanders Field' by John McCrae. In writing, we wrote information texts about Remembrance Day: why it began, what we do on Remembrance Day and what the significance of the poppy is. All students also each made a poppy. Year 5 Celebrations

Star of the week - Jameel Midego for not letting negative incidents outside of the classroom affect his learning in the classroom. Ava Cai - For returning back to school with a positive attitude for learning. Holiday Homework Celebration- Although I was amazed with everyone's homework Josie created a fabulous leaflet all about Barcelona. If I was to visit I would definitely know the best attractions thanks to Josie. Reading Journals - Danny Mourad and David Cooper for consistency every week and clear evidence of combining strategies.

Year 1 - Learning about money

This week we have been learning all about Money. We recognize coins and understand the concept of 'change' e.g. (If you give 20p, and a product is 12p, you get 8p change). We know that when we add, this means that we have more of something and that if when we subtract, we have less.

Black History Month continues.....

This week we celebrated Black History Month is style by having our own carnival. We have been learning about Claudia Jones, the lady who set up the Notting Hill Carnival. We wrote a diary entry from her perspective in Literacy. Then, in art we designed and created our own headdresses. Finally, we wore our headdresses and danced the afternoon away at our own carnival.
Maths

Maths learning this week Year 1 have been learning about Addition and Subtraction this week. We used number lines to show how many times we need to jump forwards or backwards. 'We know that the number gets bigger when adding ' - said Arsen. 'If you go to 59 and take away 8, you get 51' said Amina. We are using numbers bigger than 20 and it shows just how hard we work in Year 1!

Black History Month

Year 3 have been working very hard this week. They have enjoyed all the black history Month discussions and lessons. Writing- we have been looking at Edward Enninful and we would be writing a information leaflet based on him. DR- We have been reading poems from Valerie Bloom- 'Whoop an Shout'. History- We created a time line for the life of Edward Enninful. PSCHE- We discussed racism and why it is not okay to be racist. ART- WE have started to look at the work of Wale Adeyemi and we have designed our own t-shirts in his style.
Handwriting

We have had super handwriters in LKS2 this half term. Elizabeth in Argentina class David in Bolivia class: In Year 4, the children have all started using pens. We have seen a real improvement in handwriting since using them. Here’s is Musab in Nicaragua’s writing:
Black History Month

Columbia Class Black History Month has started at Alexandra and in Colombia class we have a lot to say. We have discussed the Black Lives Matter movement and linked our discussions to the significant people we are learning about in our History lessons. The world as we know it would not be the same without Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela, Florence Nightingale and Claudia Jones. Colombia class are on a mission to make sure everyone is treated equally regardless of their skin colour. Chile Class In Chile class we have been learning about influential black role models within History. We know that it is important to treat everyone the same and are grateful for the differences that we share at Alexandra.
Artsmark Silver Certificate

We are delighted to announce that Alexandra Primary has been awarded the Artsmark Silver Certificate. This award, run by the Arts Council England, is given to schools that bring learning to life through arts and culture and means that Alexandra Primary is giving all our students an excellent experience of the creative arts through our curriculum. We are now further developing our creative art provision by developing a two year plan which will hopefully end with us being given the Gold or Platinum Certificate.
Year 4 gets noisy!

In their science lessons, Year 4 are exploring sound. Today, they made string telephones and instruments out of straw. After they had tested them out, they made observations about how sound travels. They noticed that if the string was tight, rather than hanging loose, the sound travelled along the string. However, if one of them held the string the sound didn't travel along it. They also found out that they put one cup on their head, and someone talked into the other end, they could still hear the sound - even though it wasn't on their ear! It seemed to vibrate through our head. What wonderful science work. Well done Year 4.
'Who Am I?'

'Who Am I?' was the theme of our first week back at school. This was a fantastic way to get to know each other again after such a long break and also spend some time on creative work. The children worked so hard across the school and part of this work culminated in this display which we all enjoy as we walk by.

Black Lives Matter

Black lives matter Over the coming weeks and months we will be engaging children with learning about the Black Lives Matter movement. We believe that this is important as it is a major issue in our world today. We believe in the message that we must all work to secure human rights for all and work to combat racism in our society. Year 5 update - Friday, 18th September

In year 5 we have been creating our own statues out of tin foil based on the British sculptor Anthony Gormley. He is the creator of the wonderful 'Angel of the north.' We observed, compared and evaluated a number of his creations before planning, sketching and then creating our own using tin foil and black card.

Cuba class have really enjoyed getting to know about each other this week through our ‘Who am I?’ topic. We have also been learning about one more and one less. We have been using pictorial, concrete and abstract ways to support our learning.

The Super Scientists in Year 2 have been gathering and collecting information about their topic: Living Things and their Habitats. Both classes went on a habitat hunt and found lots of animals roaming around the school grounds. We found spiders; woodlice; beetles; butterflies; snails and much more. What animals have you seen locally? How do their habitats ensure they are safe?

Please make a note of your child’s year group, entrance gate, start and end time. Social distance measures outside the school Over the summer Haringey Council have installed barriers on the road outside the school to increase the pavement width to ensure social distancing by creating 2 pathways. Please follow the arrows that are directing the flow once you have dropped your child/ren at school. As the road has been narrowed to allow for the second pathway, please do NOT park outside the school to drop children off. Haringey have created a walking map and we would ask that you park away from the school and walk with your children. The map is attached for your information. School Lunches As with the staggered start and end times for each class, we are also staggering the children’s lunches so that they are able to have their lunch safely, within their year group. If your child has a packed lunch please bring their lunch in a packed lunch box/bag, NOT in a back pack (if your child usually brings a back pack, please leave this at home). The only items your child will need every day is their book bag and their lunch box (if they have a packed lunch). PE Kits Please only bring your child’s PE kit into school on the day they have PE. We will not be keeping them in school and they should be taken home at the end of the day to be washed. A reminder of the PE kit: White T-Shirt, dark blue or black shorts / jogging bottoms and plimsolls & PE bag Class Resources Your child will not need to bring in any class resources, these will be provided and each child will be given an individual work pack. Year 6 transition

Year 6 Transition Our year 6 children have this week been having sessions about transition to secondary school. The children were able to share their thoughts and feelings about moving on to a new and exciting phase of their education. The sessions were delivered by the staff team who have been working closely with the year 6 children over the past few weeks. We also had a very special appearance (via video link) from Ms Corrales.
WEEKLY UPDATE FRIDAY 10th July 2020

Plans for Schools in September We are looking forward to having all of the children back at school from Monday September 7th. Following the recent government guidance, we have begun to outline our plan of the school day; this includes staggered start and end times and altered break and lunchtimes to minimise contact between groups. The guidance outlines class size groups of 30 children and states that adults can work between different groups to enable the full delivery of the curriculum and any catch up and intervention programmes that are required. We are planning to use three entry points into the school for drop off and pick up; children will be expected to arrive punctually for their start time and enter the school site by the correct gate. Next week you will be receiving information about your child’s new class and teacher. We are planning to have a small number of places available for Breakfast Club and After School Club. Currently we have no plans to run after school sports clubs. We are confident with following all guidance that we are making the school as safe as it could possibly be during the current pandemic. We expect to be receiving further guidance from the government during the summer holidays; we will use all of the information and advice given to hopefully be able to reassure families that school is a safe place to be returning to in September. Lets hope for a sunny, hot summer. Heroes Not David Bowie but Oussama and year 5 who this week were thinking of heroes and asking do all heroes wear capes? The answer was an emphatic no! Some suggestion of heroes were Marcus Rashford, Greta Thunberg, staff of the National Health Service, Megan Rapinoe, Captain Tom, Michael Holding and Allan Saint-Maximin. Year 6 and Black Lives Matter Year 6 have spent much of this week doing work on Black Lives Matter and discussing issues of racism and inequality. Fire Escape and Site Security You hopefully saw the letter sent earlier this week from the Chair of Governors, Caroline Schloss, about the problem we face with the occupants of an adjacent building to the school site requiring access to the school site via their fire exit. This issues date back to the sale of the land by Haringey in 2001. Leaders within the school, since November, have been trying to resolve the issue with currently no suitable resolution for the school and little support from Haringey to resolve an issue of their making. We have now managed to arrange a meeting next week with members from Haringey in attendance to hopefully work towards an appropriate resolution. If the outcome is not to our satisfaction the likely result will be that we lose part of our playground space and entrance/exit to the school premises. It is also a distinct possibility that as a major safeguarding issue, if the owners of the adjacent property go to court to gain access to the school site via this fire escape, we will be unable to open the school in September as it will pose a serious risk to the security of the school site. ALEXANDRA PRIMARY SCHOOL FRIDAY 3rd July 2020 Plans for Schools in September You will no doubt have heard and read in the media this week that the government are implementing plans for all children to return to school in September. We are taking the guidance we have received to begin to plan for seeing all of our children in September. The government have stated that children returning to school is mandatory from September so parents must ensure all compulsory school aged children attend school. Part of the planning process will include a strict review of our current risk assessment to allow groups of up to 30 children to be part of a bubble with minimal contact with children within other groups. We will also review our current stringent hygiene measures to help minimise any risk of Covid infection. We are beginning to plan for our children to return on Monday 7th September. As we develop our planning including the possibility of staggered start and end times and restructuring the school timetable to minimise contact between groups we will share with our families. Parents of new reception children stating in September will have received an admission form to be completed and returned to school by Friday 10th July. New nursery parents will also be receiving an admissions form to be completed and returned to school by Monday 13th July. Covid Infection Rates in Haringey We have been in regular contact with Haringey Public Health who have recently informed us that there is no evidence of a spike in the rate of infection in the area. We can also report that during the period of the pandemic (and since lockdown plans were announced on Thursday 19th March) we have had no reports of any of our children contracting Covid 19. School has been open throughout that period and we have had no Covid related illness with any staff or children who have been attending in that time. MHST Telephone Support Line These uncertain times may present different and difficult challenges for children and families. Managing your mental health, emotions and wellbeing may require support. Talking About Racism As educators we are here to support you to challenge those who discriminate, to give a voice to those less heard. There is no voucher system and everyone is welcome. If you want to make donations of food or toiletries to the Food Bank, or get involved as a volunteer, you can find out more here. Friday 26th June weekly update

ALEXANDRA PRIMARY SCHOOL FRIDAY 26TH JUNE 2020 More Children Returning We have been delighted with the wider opening of the school over the past few weeks, with the return of year1, reception and then year 6 in addition to the key worker group who have been with us since 25th March. Next week we will also have children from year 5 and year 4 returning to school. Families who have indicated a desire to send their children back to school in these year groups have received a letter confirming drop off and pick up times as well the teacher who will be teaching. Thank you to the families who have been dropping off and picking up punctually at the correct times; this is essential for the safety of all as it minimises the risk of people congregating and allows social distancing to be maintained. Please continue to follow the advice to not congregate in large groups for the safety and wellbeing of everyone in the community. Free School Meals Vouchers and Summer Holidays Further to the information in our previous update, we can confirm that those families currently receiving free school meals vouchers WILL continue to do so during the summer holidays. You will receive ONE voucher to cover the 6 week period instead of weekly like you currently receive. This voucher will be emailed to families, week commencing Monday 13th July. Year 6 Return and Possible Wider Opening On Monday 22nd June we will be welcoming back a number of our children in year 6. In the past two days parents of these children will have received a letter (and a follow up phone call) confirming the time to bring their child to school and the collection time at the end of the day. Year 6 parents should also have notified us if their child will be dropped off & collected by a parent or if they are travelling independently. If your child is travelling independently you must ensure that they return home after school and do not wait for friends or congregate in groups. The wider opening arrangements are not part time on selected days; if you have indicated that you are taking a place for your child it must be every day and on time for drop off and pick up. Being prompt and punctual at the start and end of the day is essential for us to manage movement into school and social distancing of these groups of children and parents. Children must bring a packed lunch but they do not require a water bottle or their book bag. We have begun to discuss a possible plan for maybe opening for year 5 or 4; this is very much at the early stage and may not prove possible due to limitations on space or not enough staff. The first phase of this planning has been to get an indication from parents if they would send their child to school should we be able to extend opening further. If and when these plans develop we will be in touch with families who have indicated they would be ready to send their child back to school. I also want to express my gratitude to the staff who have been working tirelessly to get the site and classrooms ready for learning as we extend the opening of the school; this includes the site staff, office staff, teaching assistants and teachers who have ensured the transition to wider opening has been so successful up to this point. Google Classrooms Children in years 2, 3, 4 & 5 now have access to Google Classrooms to access work, post completed work and most exciting of all having taught sessions for writing and maths as well as story time. We hope that you have found this a supportive and useful way to access home learning. You must use your child’s email and password that was sent to you from the school to be able to access Google Classrooms. PGL Due to the current COVID pandemic and guidance from government we unfortunately have had to cancel the PGL residential trip for year 6 in October. The families have all been informed and will receive a full refund. We hope to plan alternative exciting opportunities for all of year 6 later in next academic year. Free School Meal Vouchers I am sure that you will have heard and read in the media about the government now deciding to fund FSM vouchers over the summer for those families in need who are eligible. As with many of the government announcements relating to schools since 19th March, we have not yet had any official guidance or confirmation how this system will be implemented during the summer break. As soon as we receive any guidance on how we can deliver this to you we will share the information. We must mention the work of the footballer Marcus (Daniel) Rashford whose voice and work was (and has been during this crisis) so powerful in speaking up about the vulnerable in our society, who need a government and society who are able to care and look out for them. We may not all support Manchester United but we can all applaud the change for good that his articulate voice has brought to this issue. School Uniform Grants Do you work in the fashion or textile business? This includes supermarkets with clothing such as Asda and Morrisons, clothing companies such as TKMaxx or Next and garment manufacturers. If so, you may be entitled to help with school uniform, PE kit, school equipment and possibly tablets and laptops. To be eligible for the grant, one parent must work or have recently worked for a UK fashion or textile company The work must have been for at least one year in the last nine years. The person applying for the grant must also claim child benefit for the child who needs a grant. Face coverings should be used by children travelling to and from school or nursery on public transport. Face coverings are not recommended for children under the age of 3 or those who may find it difficult to manage them correctly. World of Stories Our weekly offering from Mrs Spencer this week is World of stories. World Book Day’s World of Stories, is a place you can bring story time to life with audiobooks of your favourite books FOR FREE. Young readers can hear their favourite tales, including The Bolds by Julian Clary and The Nothing To See Here Hotel by Steven Butler. Older readers can discover fantastic books in the fiction category including A Pinch of Magic by Michelle Harrison and Rumble Star by Abi Elphinstone. These free audiobooks are read by famous voices such as Ade Adepitan, Konnie Huq, and Ben Miller. Finally Gizem in Venezuela class has been sharing some of her home learning. Reception Returning and Next Steps for Wider Opening On Monday 15th June we are widening opening of the school further with the return of reception children. The reception team are really looking forward to seeing their children return (hopefully you received your welcome back booklet); next week’s learning will be around farm animals. Wider opening for the children in year one has been very successful this week. The success is partly due to parents being on time for drop off and pick up as well as lining up outside the school at the right place and the correct time. This has ensured we have not had congregation on the pavement around the school gates. Year 1 children have enjoyed their first week back at school. They have practised their phonics, writing and maths and have learnt about the history of London, making a collage of landmarks. They have discussed what they are grateful for and are making a tree of life to celebrate themselves. It has been wonderful to have them back and school and their smiles tell us that they agree. Plans for extending the wider opening include year 6 children to return wc 22.6; these plans are dependent on the review of the arrangements throughout next week as we extend the wider opening of school. Families of year 6 children who had indicated that they were unsure or had stated their child will not return will be contacted early next week to help finalise planning. Towards the end of next week, families who have said their year 6 child will return, will receive a letter naming the teaching team and outlining the arrangements for drop off and pick up. Google Classrooms and Home Learning This week has seen the launch of Google Classrooms for children in years 2, 3 and 5. We have seen that many children have accessed the work and daily teaching videos as well as uploading completed work for their teacher to see and comment on. Next week children in year 4 will be accessing Goggle Classrooms to see teaching videos daily and to complete the work set by their teacher. These children should have received the log in details this week. If you have not received the log in details for your child (years 2,3,4 & 5 only) or are having difficulty accessing Google Classrooms please contact the school office via email at admin@alexprimary.haringey.sch.uk or call 020 8888 9771. EYFS children and parents should be continuing to use Tapestry and receiving responses from your child’s teacher to support the home learning for reception and nursery children. Google Classrooms and Home Learning During the period of the lockdown we have been in regular contact with our new IT suppliers about them supporting us to develop the resources for Home Learning. Throughout this week families of children in year 5, year 3 and year 2 have been contacted with log in details for Google Classrooms. Next week children in these year groups will be able to access videos of teachers teaching daily sessions to support the Home Learning; children who access learning via Google Classrooms will also be able to upload work for the teachers to see and to make a comment. Over the coming weeks we intend to extend this provision to the other year groups. Children can still continue to access Home Learning on the school website which should include daily maths work, writing and reading activities as well as science and history or geography. Answers for responses to maths problems will also be posted the day after the daily maths work for you to check your progress. SCHOOL UPDATE FRIDAY 22nd MAY 2020 You will have received the letter from school this week outlining the situation regarding the planned extension of school opening beyond vulnerable children and children of key workers. We are and have been in consultation meetings throughout this week with other local headteachers and Haringey’s Children’s Service. The purpose of these meetings has been to continue the detailed planning that is required to ensure we can make the school environment as safe as we possibly can for all of our staff, the children returning to school and the wider local community. There is much reporting in the various media outlets all offering different views on what should happen next in terms of extending school opening. I am sure that you will all have your own personal views dependant on your own personal situation. We have to take the view that we must feel confident that we can ensure as far as possible the wellbeing and safety for all of our staff. Once we are confident that is the case then we can be confident we have created the safest possible environment for your children to return. We will continue to be guided by government advice and directives alongside Haringey’s advice, union guidance and support as well as the views of our governing body who have also been involved in meetings this week discussing the plans for extended school opening. We hope that you are continuing to access home learning on the website. We are very aware that what is being offered for home learning in no way replaces or can match the learning opportunities offered by your children coming to school. However we endeavour to provide an opportunity for your children to continue their learning at home during this challenging time. School Update Friday 15th May 2020

SCHOOL UPDATE FRIDAY 15TH MAY 2020 No doubt you will have heard the Prime Minister on Sunday say that from 1st June, "we believe we may be in a position to begin the phased reopening of shops, and to get primary pupils back into schools, in stages, beginning with reception, Year 1 and Year 6". This was followed on Monday by the Department for Education sending to schools information which contained the statement, “with further progress we may be able… to welcome back more children to early years, school and further education settings. We will only do this provided that the five key tests set by government justify the changes at the time, including that the rate of infection is decreasing.” This was followed on Wednesday with the Communities Secretary stating at the government’s daily briefing that schools, “may open as long as data allows.” With this guidance we have begun planning for what an extended opening at Alexandra may look like. Planning for a possible extended opening is not the same as being able to implement an extended opening. Many factors are having to be considered before we could extend the opening of the school to larger groups of children. At the forefront of our mind is how we can ensure the safety of our staff team as we attempt to apply the social distancing and hygiene requirements in place to ensure that school does not become a vehicle for increasing infection rates, and therefore putting our school community, including staff, children and families at increased and unnecessary risk. Families with children in nursery, reception, year 1 and year 6 have been contacted for us to begin to gather views on how they feel about possibly extending opening. We will take the comments included in the feedback as part of our action planning process. We understand that for many families the prospect of extending school opening for your children would be a real concern until you feel it could be done safely for all involved. We are all eagerly waiting for confirmation on Sunday as to how the lockdown may begin to ease. Regarding plans for the school potentially opening again, we will await official guidance before we formulate a clear plan. As soon as announcements are made by the government about plans for schools, we will begin to communicate with families how we propose to move forward. SCHOOL UPDATE FRIDAY 1st MAY We hope that you are all staying safe and keeping well. The school continues to be closed to the majority of children due to the government lockdown advice. SCHOOL UPDATE FRIDAY 24th APRIL You may have heard and read much speculation in the media about the possibility of schools opening. We have had no official news of any date to open so as such we remained closed for the foreseeable future other than for key children. As soon as we receive any official news about the situation changing, we will contact all of our families immediately. Hello! We hope you are well and staying active and healthy as much as possible considering the circumstances. If you are well, please go on the recommended daily walk - remember your sun cream (it is dazzling out there!) and your bottle of water to keep hydrated. The Felix Project delivered some lovely vegetables on Tuesday so I tried to be creative and made vegetable tian. Here's how I did it.... Method Sautee chopped onion and crushed garlic. Once cooked, line the bottom of the dish. Slice the vegetables and make a fancy pattern so your food looks as good as it tastes! Sprinkle on some salt and herbs and brush a little oil over the top. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 180 C. Enjoy! It's a really tricky and testing time for everyone but sticking to a routine will help you. Try and go to bed and get up at the same time each day. Set a time you have to do your school work and do the same for relaxing and playing. Please do not spend all day attached to a computer/ipad/tv screen! You may want to keep a diary. This is a good way to keep your mental health in check. Write down your thoughts and feelings - good or bad - and then you can move on. Stay positive team Alexandra. We are in this together.

SCHOOL UPDATE FRIDAY 3RD APRIL We hope that you are all keeping well and continuing to follow the guidance to socially distance from people not within your household. It is important that all members of our community do this to keep themselves, their families and other vulnerable people safe at this difficult time. Following this government guidance will also support The National Health Service to work more efficiently to tackle the virus. During this period of prolonged school closure and children learning at home it is important that families and their children work together to access the range of work, links and other information on the school website. The holiday home learning pack is on the website for you to access during the Easter holiday period. The weekly home learning will next be updated on the website on Monday 20th April. All families should have received an email today about a Haringey run emotional wellbeing helpline during the period of school closure. The contact number is 0208 702 6035. The school has been in contact with families this week who are eligible for Free School Meals; this week they received vouchers purchased by the school. In the week beginning Monday 20th April, eligible families will receive an email link to the National School Voucher scheme. CORONAVIRUS UPDATE FRIDAY 27th MARCH I hope that you are all following the government directive to socially distance yourselves from other unless you absolutely have to leave the family home. The reason that this is essential is that it will help to save lives and to reduce pressure on the already stretched and overworked National Health Service staff. I hope that you all participated in the community show of appreciation last night. We are still continuing to open the school for the small number of children who have to continue to attend school. This means that the staff who are having to travel to work are potentially putting themselves and their families at risk as they are unable to follow the guidance to stay indoors. We owe these staff a huge debt of gratitude for their dedication and resilience at this time. CORONAVIRUS UPDATE WEDNESDAY 25th MARCH You will all no doubt be well aware of the governments guidance to socially distance yourselves from others. This requires families and children to not go outdoors unless absolutely necessary. People should not be gathering outdoors with people not living in their household. The reason that it is essential for all members of the community to follow the advice is to help stop the spread of the virus, save lives and to minimise the impact on the NHS. Some families have been contacted about supplies from The Felix Project and we have also contacted families about supplies form Magic Breakfast. We will keep you informed about delivery and collection arrangements. We have also been in touch with families about receiving a packed lunch if they are eligible for Free School Meals. If deliveries of milk and fruit resume we will be in touch with families about collection from school. Coronavirus Update Friday 20th March

School will be closed to all, staff and children, on Monday 23rd March. This is to enable a deep clean to take place to help minimise the risk of the spread of infection. Staff will be back in school on Tuesday 24th March. We have been working extremely hard within the school to try to ensure we have a clear plan for children of key workers and vulnerable children. We will be contacting these families directly over coming days to offer places. Children who are in school will be expected to be in uniform. The structure of the day and work within the new school day will be very different from the normal daily routine. Once we have the children in place we will share with families how the school day will be structured. The current plans are that children will begin at 8:45 until 3:10. We do not currently have provision for Breakfast Club or After School provision. School will be closed for all other children who have not been contacted directly and offered a place. Children not in school must be following the guidance for home learning which has been sent home in packs and uploaded onto the school website. We are looking into the logistics of sharing with families the milk and fruit that usually comes into school – we will keep families informed once we have a clear plan for sharing this. We will also be contacting families about how to access food we receive from The Felix Project each Tuesday. CORONAVIRUS UPDATE THURSDAY 19th MARCH You will now be aware that the Education Minister yesterday instructed schools to close after Friday 20th March until further notice. This will undoubtedly bring some anxiety to members of our school community. Please be reassured that we have been preparing as a school over the past week for this news. You will have received or collected the home learning packs from school. This work has also been uploaded onto the website for you and your children to access. The work we have shared will enable to continue learning at home with your support. We will continue to add to the website over the coming weeks to help support learning at home. We are not yet in a position to share how we can offer a service to families of key workers as we are waiting for clarity regarding definitions of key workers and circumstances required for the school to offer this service. If you have any concerns or queries please contact the school admin email address if you feel you require support, help or guidance. Corona Virus Update - Thursday 19th March 2020

Gavin Williamson, Secretary of State for Education, has asked for this message to be passed to all those who work in the education sector The government recognises the huge importance of the role you have played in maintaining the education, training and social care of our children and young people during this challenging time. I recognise that you will have the same anxieties as the rest of the country about your health and that of your families. On behalf of the Prime Minister and the entire government, I thank you all for all of your work so far, and your continued support. I am deeply grateful for the civic spirit and dedication of everyone working in education, and I will continue to provide my full support throughout this crisis. Next steps It is clear that education and children’s social care settings are increasingly finding it difficult to continue as normal, as illness and self-isolation impacts on staffing levels and pupil attendance. To provide parents, student and staff with the certainty they need we are announcing that schools, colleges and early years settings will be closed to everyone except children of key workers and vulnerable children from Monday, as part of the country’s ongoing response to coronavirus. Examples of these workers include NHS staff, police and delivery drivers who need to be able to go to work. Vulnerable children include those who have a social worker and those with Education, Health and Care Plans. A full list of key worker categories will be published by the Cabinet Office tomorrow. Children who do not fall into these groups should remain at home with appropriate care. Where schools are unable to provide this reduced provision, local authorities will work with the Department for Education’s regional teams to ensure an alternative option is available. We are expecting early years providers and sixth form and further education colleges to do the same. We are working with Her Majesty’s Treasury on the financial support required. We are also asking that independent schools and boarding schools follow the same approach. Where possible, we would encourage settings to stay open for this purpose throughout the Easter holidays. Many universities and other higher education institutions are already taking necessary steps to keep their staff and students safe and where possible keep providing education. We are confident vice-chancellors are making the right decisions and the Department for Education continues to support them in doing so. Temporary suspension of Ofsted inspections Ofsted is to temporarily suspend routine inspections of schools, colleges, early years settings, children’s social care providers and local authorities to reduce the burden on staff who are providing vital services to the nation in response to coronavirus. Update on assessments and examinations We can confirm that we will not go ahead with assessments or exams, and that we will not be publishing performance tables for this academic year. We will work with the sector and Ofqual to ensure children get the qualifications they need. My Department is working closely with local authorities, representatives of early years, schools and head teachers, regional school commissioners and bodies such as Ofsted and Ofqual about how to deliver this change as effectively as possible. And we will do whatever is necessary to support local authorities, settings, schools and teachers through the weeks and months ahead. Free school meal provision We will give schools the flexibility to provide meals or vouchers to children eligible for free school meals. Some schools are already doing this, and we will reimburse the costs. As soon as possible, we will put in place a national voucher system. NEWS UPDATE WEDNESDAY 18TH MARCH The Education Secretary has confirmed that schools will close on Friday as a consequence of the Coronavirus epidemic. The message was very clear; schools are not more high risk with this epidemic but it is about slowing the spread of the virus. Home learning books were sent home today with families with home learning tasks and activities for the next two weeks. This work will also be uploaded onto the school website for you to access from home. Teachers will be planning further home learning for after the Easter break should schools continue to be closed into April and May. We will keep you updated of any developments with this situation over the coming days and weeks. We urge all members of our school community to be socially responsible, following official guidance and advice, to ensure that we protect all members of our community, particularly the elderly and those most at risk of this virus.
A letter from the chair of Governors

Dear Parents and Carers, GOVERNORS UPDATE 18 March 2020 I am aware that the school is giving you regular updates on the current situation in relation to Coronavirus (Covid 19). However, I just wanted to contact you on behalf of the Governing Body. I know that the past couple of weeks have been very unsettling and confusing. The school is currently open as usual, in line with guidelines being issued by the government. As of last Monday evening, if any member of your household has a cough, high temperature or shortness of breath you must all self-isolate for 14 days. If your family is not self-isolating, many of you will be asking yourselves how to keep your children safe. There may well be specific matters relating to your family circumstances which make you decide not to send your children to school. I do understand why you might decide to do that and of course that is your choice. Nonetheless, current government guidance is still stating that all children should be attending school unless they have grounds for self-isolating. It would be reassuring to think this situation will all be over in a week or two, but unfortunately it looks like we will be facing a difficult few months ahead. The school staff are making plans to deal with the eventuality of the school closing. In the meantime, all staff are working exceedingly hard to make life at school as normal as possible for the children whilst also introducing measures to try and ensure their safety. I was at school yesterday and it was reassuring to see the children running around at playtime having as much fun as they always do. I also want to say a big thank you to all the staff for working so hard in such difficult circumstances. I am always so impressed by their dedication and now more than ever. CORONAVIRUS UPDATE WEDNESDAY 18TH MARCH Whilst we understand the anxiety of many families within our community during the current epidemic, the school will remain open in line with ongoing government guidance. SELF ISOLATION If a family member or a member of your household shows symptoms of the coronavirus, then all members of that household must self-isolate for 14 days. Families cannot self-isolate with their children and then return children to school until the 14-day period of isolation has passed. This is a public health emergency and all members of the community have a social responsibility to follow guidance and advice coming from government and Public Health England. This will help to minimise the risk for all, especially the elderly and other vulnerable members of our community. Families who are self-isolating to minimise the spread of infection, and to protect the wider public, when a family member shows signs of the illness will not be penalised for not attending school for the two-week period. symptoms of coronavirus are: a cough a high temperature shortness of breath SOCIAL DISTANCING If you are choosing to keep your children away from school to help prevent the spread of the virus, particularly if you live with elderly family members or people with an underlying illness, then the current advice is that it is only likely to be effective if these vulnerable groups are protected for a period of up to 12 weeks. We are now limiting visits to school for all but essential staff and this includes the after school sports clubs. We are cancelling sports clubs with the coaches from Wednesday 18th March until further notice. We are in the process of preparing for home learning in the event of school closure; your children will be coming home with work books and log in details over the coming days. We understand your concerns and anxiety and are here to speak with you and answer any questions and concerns that you may have. Coronavirus Update Tuesday 17th March

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE TUESDAY 17TH MARCH You will be aware that the Prime Minister yesterday made a further announcement on the situation regarding the spread of Coronavirus (Covid 19). The symptoms of coronavirus are: a cough a high temperature shortness of breath The new advice is that if any member of your family or household shows possible symptoms of Coronavirus then all members of the household must self-isolate within the house for a period of 14 days to minimise the risk of spreading infection. Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing. Families who are self-isolating to minimise the spread of infection, and to protect the wider public, when a family member shows signs of the illness will not be penalised for not attending school for the two-week period. During this period, we have made provision to be more stringent when cleaning the school and to clean more frequently throughout the school day on multi touch surfaces such as door handles, light switches and hand rails. We are contingency planning should the school be required to close due to the virus. This involves planning and preparing for home learning away from the school site whilst children are at home. Teachers will not be preparing home learning packs whilst school is open. We have made a decision to cancel all planned trips including swimming, in line with the Prime Ministers advice to limit travel unless essential. We have postponed all assemblies during this period including Mexico 4 (20th March) and Nicaragua 4 (27th March). We will also cancel the school carnival during the last week of term. We will also postpone Thursday morning Reading with parents and carers for the foreseeable future. We are thankful of the support we are receiving from parents as we make these decisions in difficult times, where we follow government advice, advice from Department for Education and Public Health England.

This is your daily email to keep you updated on the government’s response to COVID-19 (coronavirus). There is updated guidance for schools, current advice remains in place: no education or children’s social care setting should close in response to a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 case unless advised to do so by Public Health England. Updated guidance for education settings on coronavirus (COVID-19) Today, the Department for Education and Public Health England have issued updated guidance for education settings on COVID-19. This guidance will assist staff in addressing COVID-19 in educational settings. This includes childcare, schools, further and higher educational institutions. What you need to know: · staff, young people and children should stay at home if they are unwell with a new, continuous cough or a high temperature to avoid spreading infection to others. Otherwise they should attend education or work as normal · if staff, young people or children become unwell on site with a new, continuous cough or a high temperature they should be sent home · clean and disinfect regularly touched objects and surfaces more often than usual using your standard cleaning products · supervise young children to ensure they wash their hands for 20 seconds more often than usual with soap and water or hand sanitiser and catch coughs and sneezes in tissues The updated guidance can be found here: · https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-to-educational-settings-about-covid-19/guidance-to-educational-settings-about-covid-19#contents Current advice remains in place: no education or children’s social care setting should close in response to a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 case unless advised to do so by Public Health England. The Chief Medical Officer has advised that the impact of closing schools on both children’s education and on the workforce would be substantial, but the benefit to public health may not be. Decisions on future advice to education or children’s social care settings will be taken based on the latest and best scientific evidence, which at this stage suggests children are a lower risk group. Recording school pupil absences Where a pupil is in self-isolation, in accordance with latest information and advice from Department of Health and Social Care and Public Health England, the pupil should be recorded as unable to attend due to exceptional circumstances in the attendance register. Code Y (Unable to attend due to exceptional circumstances) should be used in this instance. If a pupil does not attend school, despite the school operating as usual and the pupil is not self-isolating, they should be marked as absent. It is for headteachers to determine whether or not the absence is authorised depending on the individual circumstances. Where a pupil cannot attend school due to illness, as normally would happen, the pupil should be recorded as absent in the attendance register and the school will authorise the absence. Code I (Illness) should be used in this instance. Handwashing advice The most important thing individuals can do to protect themselves is to wash their hands more often, for at least 20 seconds, with soap and water. Public Health England recommends that in addition to handwashing before eating, and after coughing and sneezing, everyone should also wash hands after using toilets and travelling on public transport. Coronavirus Update Monday 16th March

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE MONDAY 16th MARCH We have had confirmation this morning that a family member within our school community has a confirmed case of Coronavirus. The family member has not recently been on the school site. The family are currently self-isolating. We have sought advice from Haringey’s Director of Public Health, who has informed us that we need to take no further action and that we do not need to close the school. He also said in his response to us that, “Over the next few weeks and days there will be more staff and pupils with suspected coronavirus. They need to stay off school while unwell for 7 days. Remember this is a mild illness in children and young people.” If you suspect that either you or a family member has the Coronavirus infection, please follow the advice from Public Health England to self-isolate for 7 days. The symptoms of coronavirus are: a cough a high temperature shortness of breath But these symptoms do not necessarily mean you have the illness. The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu. Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.

World Book Week

We had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Week last Friday. Everyone looked amazing in their costumes and we are so pleased with the writing and art outcomes from all pupils over the last two weeks. We have loved learning about the plot and characters of Peter Pan.

This is your daily email to keep you updated on the government’s response to COVID-19 (coronavirus). Government announces move from Contain to Delay phase Yesterday, the Government announced that we are moving from the Contain phase of the coronavirus action plan and into the Delay phase, in response to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Full details of each stage in the government action plan can be found here: · https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-action-plan To support the delay of the spread of the virus, the Department for Health and Social Care has asked anyone who shows certain symptoms to stay at home for 7 days, regardless of whether they have travelled to affected areas. This means people should stay at home and avoid all but essential contact with others for 7 days from the point of displaying mild symptoms, to slow the spread of infection. The symptoms are: · A high temperature (37.8 degrees and above) · A new, continuous cough You do not need to call NHS 111 to stay at home. If your symptoms worsen during your stay at home period or are no better after 7 days contact NHS 111 online at 111.nhs.uk. If you have no internet access, you should call NHS 111. For a medical emergency dial 999. Current advice remains in place: no education or children’s social care setting should close in response to a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 case unless advised to do so by Public Health England. CORONAVIRUS UPDATE There has been much recent speculation in the media about Coronavirus and the impact on schools. We are receiving regular updates from Public Health England, Department for Education and Haringey regarding the impact of the Coronavirus on schools; all up to date and recent information is posted regularly on our school website. School is continuing to function as normal with an increased focus and awareness on personal hygiene around regular washing of hands with soap and water and the use of hand sanitisers. We are also continuing to plan and attend trips for our children until we receive advice or other information that suggests we should refrain from using public transport. World Book Week - Storyteller

Today we had a special visit from a storyteller as part of our World Book Week celebrations. The children were all so engaged and mesmerised by these stories. Storytelling is a unique way for kids to develop an understanding, respect and appreciation for other cultures, and can promote a positive attitude to people from different lands and religions.

Fire Brigade visit

Year 2 and Year 5 had a visit from the Fire Brigade today. We found out about the important job that the fire brigade carry out, the clothes they wear and that they take only 6 minutes to arrive at an emergency. We learnt how to keep safe, for example not to play with matches or to leave a candle burning if we leave the room. We also learnt that we all should have a smoke alarm on each floor of our homes, on the ceiling as smoke travels upwards.
Bolivia Class - Farewell to Forest School

Our last week at Ally Pally's Forest School was fantastic. First, Katie tested our knowledge of birds before we were allowed to enter our Forest School. Then, we played a game of Man Hunt which was a lot of fun and kept us warm. Next, we went through the rules of Forest School, particularly the rules around the fire, including never to enter the fire circle without asking for permission. Following that, we were allowed to choose what we wanted to do - some of us built the den even bigger, some of us played with the tree that had fallen down in the recent storm, some of us made 'magic sticks', some of us got creative with clay and we all got to toast marshmallows on the fire to create 'smores'. Finally, we ended our Forest School experience with our usual hot chocolate and, as a special bonus, we also had some popcorn that we had cooked on the open fire. We really have had a wonderful time at Ally Pally and were very sad to say goodbye to Katie who led it so well. Katie kindly gave us a book 'Nature Journal' to take back to our class and she dedicated it to "our wonderful class of explorers". She said she was so impressed by Bolivia Class and that we were a "joy to work with." We've been given a copy of a page of it to take home over half term to write down observations we make of the natural world. After half term, we can send them to Katie to show her that we are carrying on with our learning and appreciation of nature. Argentina Class get to go next half term. How exciting for them.
Bolivia Forest School Week 5

Bolivia Class had a fantastic time at Forest School on Friday. This week we learnt about fire: the rules of fire at Forest School, the types of wood we need for our fire and how to stay safe. Then, we all collected different types of wood to use as fuel for the fire and we also took it in turns to either try to light the fire by creating a spark or to feed the fire with fuel. Next week, we are hoping the weather stays fine and we can cook on the fire as it will be our last week there.
Year 2 trip to St Paul’s church in Haringey

On Thursday 6th February, Year 2 visited St Paul’s church to support their learning about Christianity in RE. We learnt about why Christians go to church and the priest explained about all the important objects that we could see in the building. We saw a font where babies are baptised and saw the bread and wine used for Communion. We also sung a song, heard a prayer and a story from the Bible. We had a great afternoon and enjoyed learning more about the church.

Bolivia goes Roman at the Museum of London

After taking the overground train from Ally Pally to Moorgate, we arrived raring to go at the Museum of London. After a snack and a drink, we met with 'Marcus' (not our Marcus) who told us all about Roman life in London 1700 years ago. Following that, we had a chance to explore the Roman London gallery and see mosaics, Roman soldiers, gold coins, the original London wall, shops as they were in Roman times and even a model of what London looked like. Happy to have our lunch, we then headed back to school. Back in class, we just had time to finish off the Roman mosaics that we have been making in class.
Safer Internet Day

On Tuesday 11th February we will be joining schools and youth settings across the UK in celebrating Safer Internet Day 2020. Safer Internet Day is a global campaign to promote the safe and responsible use of technology, which calls on young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers, and wider, to join together in helping to create a better internet. Using the internet safely and positively is a key message that we promote at Alexandra, and celebrating Safer Internet Day is a great opportunity for us to re-emphasise the online safety messages we deliver throughout the year. Some of the activities we’ll be participating in on the day include: 2.30 – 3.00 – Miss Pitre will be delivering an information session in the main hall to parents about how to keep your children safe online. We’d be delighted if you could join us in celebrating the day by continuing the conversation at home. Forest School - Week 4

As we were walking up the hill, Katie, our Forest School Teacher, met us and took us off a (rather muddy) adventure. We sat, with Alexandra Palace in our view, and talked about the 'web of life' and we demonstrated it with a big ball of wool that we passed from person to person as we identified how all things in nature are dependent on each other. Then, we dusted ourselves off, and went back to our home base where we did some free play. We built another teepee, made more mud pies, found more creatures and generally had a great time. The rain even stayed away. We can't wait for next week.
Young Voices at the O2
Year 4 visit to The Tate Britain

In September 2018, as part of an ambitious project created by London-born Turner Prize-winning artist and Oscar-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen, partners Tate, Artangel and A New Direction invited every primary school in London to be part of a giant collective portrait, capturing tens of thousands of Year 3 schoolchildren in a milestone year in their development. The photos would come together in a major new artwork as an epic picture of the city’s present and an intimation of its future. Year 3 is considered a milestone year in a child’s development and sense of identity, when 7-and 8-year-olds become more conscious of a much bigger world beyond their immediate family. Steve McQueen’s project captures this moment of excitement, anticipation and hope through the medium of the traditional class photograph, with rows of children sitting or standing alongside their teachers. Yesterday Year 4 visited the Tate Britain to view their picture on a big screen and then in the gallery along with all the others. The children were thrilled and excited to see their portrait on display in one of the world's most famous galleries. Entry to The Tate Britain is free so why not go along with your child to view this amazing exhibition.
Year 6 Trip to The Mall

On Friday, some Year 6 students attended an exhibition and The Mall. As you may be aware, Haringey Council is currently working alongside residents, community organisations, businesses and schools, to deliver The Wood Green and Turnpike Lane Design Manual. The Design Manual will inform the design of public spaces and landscaping and will be tested through a series of public realm interventions. These interventions are intended to improve the public realm experience for local people and businesses in and around Wood Green Town Centre and Turnpike Lane. We thought who better to have their voice and opinions heard than some of our students. The exhibition was very interesting and there were members of the council there to answer any questions and explain what may be happening in our local community. We were particularly interested in the 'Tackling Climate Change' information as it links to our current geography lessons. 'The idea of suds under the green areas in Wood Green to drain the water away seemed really good because the drains won't get blocked.' Ashton. 'I like the idea of building more play areas and things to do in parks because the children will have more entertainment.' Chardonnay. 'The man explained the idea of a 'school street' to us. It's when the road a school is on is shut for 45 minutes before and after the school is open. It will reduce cars and their engines running causing pollution.' Lorin. 'I could still ride my bike to school and up to the school. It would be safe for me as some parents are rushing off to work and may hit us.' Ashton.
Choir to the O2 Young Voices Concert

On Thursday 23rd January, our choir set off for the O2 to perform as part of the largest children's choir in the world, Young Voices. We arrived just before 1pm and we were directed to our VIP suite (very nice indeed!) where we could eat our lunch. From 2pm, we rehearsed all afternoon, going through the songs and the dance moves! Then, there was an hour break to eat our dinner and we then returned to our seats for 6pm. We watched are the audience filled the arena and then we were ready to start our performance at just after 7pm. What a wonderful evening it was - full of song and dance. We were very proud of our 26 choir members, from years 4, 5 and 6, for how hard they worked to be ready for the performance and then for how well they performed on the night. Well done alll.
Bolivia Class At Forest School Week 3

Again, we had a brilliant time at Forest School in Ally Pally. This week, there were lots of different activities we could be involved in and we could chose what we wanted to do: exploring the area, collecting branches to build our 'teepee', making mud pies, mud painting, making figures out of clay, creating 'magic sticks', using binoculars to look closely at things.... The wealth of activities was endless and we really got in touch with nature this week. It was a joyous afternoon of discovery.
'Old MacDonald had a Farm'

In Nursery we have been looking at 'Old MacDonald had a Farm.' We have been singing the song and adding actions to the song. We have been working together on group collage to create the farmer, the farm and the animals for a class display. We have selected our own resources for our collage.
Forest School Week 2

We had a fantastic afternoon in Ally Pally again today. First, we went foraging for natural thing to tie to our sticks to make our lovely 'art sticks' or 'journey sticks'. Then, we played another couple of games of 'man hunt'. After that, we worked in groups to find bits of nature to create our own mythical creatures and named them ourselves - one we called 'Pallygon' because we created it at Ally Pally. Finally, we washed our hands and finished with hot chocolate. Apparently, we are going to be making more things next week ..... we can't wait.
Celebration Assembly Years 3 & 4

In our celebration assembly this week, we gave out certificates to children for showing ‘character’. As always, it was tricky to chose just two children from each class. Here are our ‘Stars of the Week', for the first week of Spring 1. Well done all.
Bolivia goes Wild

Following a stomp up the hill to the East Court of Ally Pally, we were welcomed by Katie, our Forest School Leader, and Isobel, the Learning Manager at Ally Pally. After a quick toilet stop, we headed straight to our Forest School learning area (searching for leaves on the way) where we will be doing our learning for the next 6 weeks, one afternoon a week. First, we went through the Forest School rules. Then, we closed our eyes and listened to what we could hear. We noticed all sorts of things: birds singing, dogs barking, cars in the distance. Next, we discussed the different songs that different birds sing and Katie had four different toy singing birds so we could hear their different songs - a robin, a blackbird, a woodpecker and a nightingale. Our challenge is to see if we can hear them, and recognise their different melodies, when we are in the forest. Then, we explored our Forest School area. After that, we played all different kinds of games in the forest (Leaf Snap, Man Hunt and Find the Pine-cone) which were a lot of fun. Finally, we all sat down on our tarpaulin and had some well-deserved hot chocolate before we had to march home. A great afternoon. (Did I mention the badger pooh?)
Winter Sing Along

Alexandra Primary celebrated the end of our Autumn Term yesterday with a Winter Sing Along after school. There was all sorts going on - teachers singing carols, Christmas cards being made, festive food and even some Christmas dancing. It was a lovely celebration.
KS2 Carol Concert

We celebrated Christmas in style this afternoon at the KS Christmas Carol Concert. Performing to a packed house, the children did fantastically well in their performance. At the start, the audience were surprised by children jumping out of large Christmas presents and we were in for more treats as the afternoon went on. Each year group performed their different carols wonderfully well and we also got to enjoy solos from children on their different instruments - from electric guitars through to violins via the steel pans. We ended the afternoon with all of KS2 in the hall singing a medley of different carols, ending with 'Feliz Navidad', a school favourite.
Carol Singing for the Elderly

For the third year running, we visited the Palace Gate Supported Housing for the Elderly to sing Christmas carols and share the Christmas joy. We started with our choir's favourite 'O Holy Night' and ended with 'Feliz Navidad' with lots of traditional carols in between. The elderly people joined in with the singing. After we had finished, we all partook in juices and biscuits and chatted for a while. Ken, our wonderful music teacher, even found another 'Ken' - a 94 year old one! It was a lovely, festive time, full of good cheer. Well done our choir.

KS2 Pantomime

All of KS2 set off, battling the rain, to get to ChickenShed Theatre to go to see 'Snow White' this afternoon. It was a truly amazing experience. When we arrived, we all quickly had our lunch and then took our places in the theatre and settled in for a wonderful performance and we were extra lucky as we all got to enjoy an ice lolly in the interval. Year 3 even got to meet one of the stars, that played Jason, at the end. He told us that he is married to Snow White in real life! We are not sure whether to believe him or not. A wonderful afternoon was had by all. 'That was the best trip ever' said Year 3 child. One member of staff at the theatre was also heard to say, 'What a credit your children are to you. You should be so proud. They are so well behaved.' Well done Alexandra!
Our beautiful ballerinas

Parents and carers were invited in tonight to see the achievements of their budding ballerinas. The KS1 Ballet Club put on a fine show for them and it was delightful to see. Well done, our wonderful ballerinas.
Thursday Music Club

Tonight, the wonderful children in our Thursday Music Club had the opportunity to share their musical learning with their parents and carers. This term they have been focusing on stringed instruments - and so played us the ukulele, the guitar and the violin! The children then had the chance to teach their parents and carers the instrument and then watched them perform. Fabulous fun and fabulous learning.
Bolivia's Trip to the Design Museum

Today, Bolivia Class visited The Design Museum. Upon arrival, we headed straight to our workshop 'Designer, Maker, User'. There we analysed a whole range of rather unusual products - thinking about what they were, how they were designed and who the user of the product would be. Following that, we talked about how drawing is a way to communicate our different ideas. Then we were given a design brief and worked in pairs to design our own products. After lunch, we headed off into the 'Designer, Maker, Gallery' and explored all the designed products that have been developed over the years. Finally, we had a chance to explore products and design some more. What a fabulous day of learning! We will now take back what we have learnt and use it in our Design and Technology this term where we are designing and making our very own Moving Monsters.
Bolivia Class Assembly

We were treated to some wonderful drumming, dancing and singing this morning at Bolivia's Class assembly and we also found out all about their fantastic learning. What a great start to a Friday! Thank you Bolivia Class.
The Big Draw at Alexandra

After half term, we returned to school for a week of creativity. Alexandra Primary took part in The Big Draw for the third year running. The Big Draw celebrates drawing and creativity. This year, we focused on the book 'The Dot' by Peter H. Reynolds and explored the theme that everyone of us is creative in our own special way. We were creative in various ways during the week - drawing with chalk in the playground, creating a 'dot graffitti wall', creating our own books for sketching and sketching in them every day and we finished the week by inviting parents in to have a creative afternoon on the Friday. The theme of that afternoon was to create some art based around the idea of a dot. When you come in to school, have a look for our 'dot' art wall.
Year 2 Trip to Woodberry Wetlands

On Thursday, Year 2 visited Woodberry Wetlands, a nature and wildlife reserve. We had a brilliant day learning about habitats to support our learning in Science. We went pond dipping and mini beast hunting. We found mayflies, worms and even a centipede!

The Orchestra Rehearses Our orchestra meets every Friday morning before school. They are currently rehearsing 'Strings for Christmas' and working hard on their bowing techniques on the violin and cello. Don't they look professional?

We are proud to be support two fantastic charities: The Felix Project provides a free door-to-door service to collect surplus food from suppliers, and deliver it to charities and schools. You can collect these from school every Tuesday afternoon. The Poppy Appeal Every year, the Legion calls on the nation to unite in commemorating Remembrance Sunday. On Sunday 10 November 2019, the National Service of Remembrance will be held at the Cenotaph on Whitehall, London. To support this we will be selling poppies in school from Tuesday 29th November.
Black History Month Galley

The children have enjoyed celebrating throughout Black History Month and a selection of their work was on display last Friday.
Black History Month in Reception

In Reception we have been looking at jazz music and its birthplace New Orleans. We read 'This Jazz Man' which we performed and explored the different instruments jazz musicians choose to play. We made our own life-size jazz man and dressed him in cloths left by our mysterious visitor. We listened to a different piece of jazz music each day and explored a whole host of new vocabulary surrounding music and how it makes us feel. We also looked at 'Trombone shorty' which tells the true story of a current musician who now leads the Mardi Gras parade each year with his jazz ensemble. We explored New Orleans using google earth and followed the parade route through the town. Then it was time to prepare for our own parade so we made masks, instruments and flags. We prepared a dish of vegetarian gumbo (which is a staple dish in New Orleans) after writing a list of ingredients and then got to enjoy our dish after parading around the school. Nursery have been overwhelmed with the generosity of the parents who brought in dishes from around the world to share with us. Many of the children came into school wearing beautiful traditional clothing which they spoke about and couldn't wait to show off around the classroom. We have enjoyed music sessions with Ken looking at jazz music and even had a go at reading musical notation!
Bolivia Trip to The Natural History Museum

What a wonderful day we have had. Travelling to the Natural History Museum by tube, we arrived just in time for our workshop - Dino Scene Investigation. Becoming paleontologists for an hour, we discovered dinosaur bones and talked about what we could learn by looking at them closely. After lunch, we visited the Dinosaur Exhibition (with moving dinosaurs) and ended our day in the Museum of the Moon, lying under the a huge sculpture of the moon. A great day of learning by all.
Cave Painting in Bolivia

In History we have been learning about the Stone Age. To link with this, in art we have been exploring cave paintings and how they might have made them. Today, we used charcoal, chalk and chalk pastels to create our own cave paintings. We drew animals from the Stone Age, hunters and also symbols that have been found in cave paintings. Do you like them?
Poet, Neal Zetter, visited us on Friday to immerse us in our learning for National Poetry Day. He introduced the day by reading some of his popular poems in a whole school assembly. He then visited each class to deliver exciting workshops on how to write effective poems.
Healthy Schools Update

It's been a busy start to the new year and Alexandra has been go, go, go! We kicked off the new year by teaming up with the Felix Project, so every Tuesday in the playground we have free fruit and vegetables and other foods for you to have - did I mention it's FREE?! It has been very popular so make sure you're here when the gates open or else it will be all gone. The Felix Project provides schools with food shops are unable to sell. We have discussed with the children that just because a carrot has a scratch or 'bad bit' on it, doesn't mean we cannot eat it. Eat the good bits and don't waste food. We had so many carrots in the first delivery Mrs Spencer went home and made carrot juice...rumour has it, she can now see in the dark!
Y6 Trip To Heartlands

The Year 6's worked scientifically at Heartlands Highschool by investigating what cells look like under a microscope .
PGL Day 5

Our last day involved the trapeze jump and the sensory trail. Trapeze put us all to the test, what a great last activity! Sensory trail tested our team work and communication skills. We have just departed on our journey home . See you around 3:45pm.

The final full day has been a busy one. The children have really impressed us with their resilience, perseverance, team work and kindness towards each other during activities. This week proves that they can be independent, even when missing home and facing their fears. It has been a pleasure to watch them grow in confidence and get to know them better. Thank you for that opportunity! We are sure you have missed them - they have missed you. Enjoy your weekend, please make sure the children rest and we will see you bright and early on Monday morning (sorry about the washing it's been muddy!). Bolivia Explores Charcoal

In Year 3, we are learning about cave paintings and how to create them in our art lessons. This links with our History studies of The Stone Age. Last Friday, we explored making different marks with charcoal and found out how to create different effects. We used the side of charcoal, the sharp end, small bits of charcoal, large pieces of charcoal and explored smudging it all together. We also used an eraser to create white lines on our page and used chalk to create different patterns. As well as getting very messy, we learnt that charcoal breaks easily so you can't press to hard, that you can create a lovely grey if you mix charcoal with chalk and that you can create lots of different effects with just these simple things. We are looking forward to creating our own cave paintings in a couple of weeks.

Day 3 PGL - Update

Good evening! It has been a fantastic day here in Surrey. The children have put themselves to the test with the range of activities they have participated in and have been great team players and supporters. This evening activity was sports games which sounds easy and straight forward but not when it’s dark. We had to cut the session short as we really couldn’t see each other so we came inside to play some games and the children finally got to spend some time doing what they have asked for since they arrived...to spend some time in each other’s rooms. It was very exciting but everyone is i n bed ready for our last full day tomorrow and of course, tomorrow evening’s main event, the disco! Goodnight from PGL.

El Salvador Assembly

Last Friday El Salvador had their class assembly, thank you to all the families for attending and well done to the children.
PGL - Day 3

Day three of PGL and the fun continues! Buggy building in the rain was great fun first thing this morning. The challenge course was amazing. The children really pushed themselves to the max. Abseiling was a hit, everyone was very brace. The challenge course was brilliant. After completing it individually we had to then do it as a team without letting go of a rope. Of course we succeeded.
PGL - Day 2 Update

Hello from PGL! We have had the busiest day, all groups have been super stars. We have shown resilience and great team work in all of our activities today. Our evening activity was fantastic - real life Cluedo! The children were in four groups trying to work out the mystery. There aren’t any photos because it was all outside in the dark! Tomorrow brings more amazing activities for each group.
Day 2 and the weather has been kind! Ms Calin's group did the low rope challenge and zip wire this morning. Miss Corrales’ group went ziplining and balanced on ropes. We persevered and displayed risilience. Miss Mackey's group showed great teamwork during Jacob's Ladder and had so much fun zip lining this morning!
PGL - Day 1

Good evening from PGL! Our journey here was quick and easy, no one was ill and everyone was calm. Once we had arrived we went straight to the rooms and then for a tour of the grounds. Dinner was lovely and the salad bar was a hit - go team 6 representing our healthy school when away. After, we played some team games with our PGL leader, Lauren. Unfortunately, the rain meant we weren’t able to have our campfire but we sang some songs and had a fun evening inside instead. Everyone was very excited to get back to the rooms to get ready for bed and the teachers patrolled the corridor for a long time (and even sat in some extra chatty doorways) but everyone fell sound asleep and we will be ready for action in the morning. Years 3 & 4 Take Pride

We have weekly celebration assemblies. The theme of this week was Pride. Here are 4 children who were chosen who have taken particular pride this week - some were commended for always showing pride in wearing the correct uniform, some for taking pride in their beautiful writing and some for taking pride in doing the best they can in maths. A very proud moment for all.

We have been working hard to develop our new Forest School area by designing our space, planting a range of different things and carefully watering the beds each day. We are keen to recruit parent volunteers to support our efforts to cultivate a new green space for our whole school to enjoy. If you would like to support our efforts to make the school more inviting for local wildlife and promote ecological diversity please speak with a member of the Early Years team.

Homework Assembly

On Friday, we celebrated the wonderful holiday homework that Years 3 and 4 have created over the summer holidays. Year 3 are excited about studying the Stone Age and we had two fabulous creations of 3D Stone Age dwellings. Year 4 are thrilled to be studying The Vikings and we were treated to two 3D models of Viking long ships. Well done to these children who won the certificate for the most outstanding homework in each class but also a big well done to everyone that brought in holiday homework. It really does help ignite interest in the subject and causes a buzz for learning.
New Climbing Wall

We are delighted with the new climbing wall that the children have been enjoying since returning. Please note that this should not be used before and after school.
100% ATTENDANCE

We had 21 children who had 100%attendance for the whole of this academic year; these children received a Gold certificate at the Celebration Assembly this week. A further 49 children received Silver Certificates for having 100% attendance for two terms this year and 41 children received Bronze for having 100% attendance during the summer term. Six of our children have had 100% attendance for the past two years; well done Claudia, Misha, Josie, Jake, Aaliyah and Issa. A fantastic achievement. NEVER MISSED A DAY Most remarkably of all, Jake in year 6,has not missed one day of school since he started in Reception in September 2012 - an amazing seven years without a day off. To mark this wonderful achievement the Mayor of Haringey, Sheila Peacock, visited the school to congratulate Jake. We must also mention Aaliyah who has 99% attendance since she started in Reception in 2012 - the equivalent of only 12 days absence in 7 years.
Music Club at Alexandra

Music Club takes place after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Ken, our fabulous music teacher. We recently celebrated their achievements by putting on a performance to showcase their learning. This term they have worked on the guitar, the ukelele and steel drums. We are also treated to some stunning solo performances. Well done music club attendees! We do have some spaces available in Music Club so if your child is interested in participating, please get in touch with the school office.
Mini-greenhouses in Argentina

Argentina Class have been hard at work Design & Technoology this half term - evaluating existing greenhouses, designing our own mini-greenhouses and then creating them ourselves. First, we used hacksaws to cut our balsa wood to make our the 'legs' of our greenhouse - we had to measure them carefully and then cut them out. Then, we used a glue gun to stick them together, using lollipop sticks as the pieces in between. We made a design decision whether to make our mini-greenhouse as a cuboid or a cube shape. To strengthen our structure, we put supporting bits of wood across the faces of the cube/cuboid. Finally, we cut up old book covers to act as our glass and we had created our mini-greenhouses. We were very proud of our achievement.
Xandra, The Musical

After months of hard work by Ken, our music teacher, and the enthusiastic members of our choir and orchestra, 'Xandra, the Musical' hit the stage in our main hall. The musical was created by Ken with the help of the choir and the orchestra. All our students have been coming in at 8am on Tuesday and Friday mornings since the end of February and their hard work paid off. Parents, carers and staff were treated to an amazing performance, full of zest, musical talent and joy. Our wonderful choir meets on Tuesday mornings at 8:15am. It is open to Year 4, 5 and 6 and, if you are interested in joining in the new academic year, please talk to Ms Kennedy or Ken. Our amazing orchestra meets on Friday mornings at 8am. It is by invitation only. However, if you are interested in joining in the new academic year, please talk to Ms Kennedy or Ken.
Musical Showcase Years 3 & 4

In their music lessons this term, Years 3 and 4 have been working on composition with their music teacher, Ken, and last Friday, they performed their fabulous songs to parents and carers and school staff. The themes ranged from the sun to respect and were great creative works, performed well by the classes. Individual musicians also showcased their talents on the steel drums, the piano and the violin. We ended with our school anthem 'Aspire, Enjoy, Achieve'. A great morning of musical creativity.

Argentina trip to Railway Fields

Argentina Class visited Railway Fields Nature Reserve in Haringey today. What a beautiful place! We observed plants, did some wonderful drawings, created some bark rubbings and immersed ourselves in nature. A great afternoon.
Y5 STEM Competition

On Thursday 27th June, Ryhen, Sienna, Shay, Chardonnay and Adam from Year 5 participated in an interSTEM competition against 8 other teams. Their task was to build the tallest and strongest structure that could hold a basketball for 10 seconds. Our structure was 0.8m and it was able to support the weight. Well done.
Health, Fun & Fitness Week

Health, fun and fitness week was jam-packed full of sporting activities and challenges. Children experienced new sports, learnt about the importance of both physical and mental health, made healthy snacks, competed at sports day and most importantly had fun and enjoyed themselves. Here are just some of the highlights from the week: Reception to Year 3 learnt ballet and pirouetted and plié their way through Monday. Year 4 to Year 6 took inspiration from America and went to Wood Green Common to learn American Football. Every class made a healthy snack this week. Each child then wrote the recipe to take home. Please make them at home! They all looked delicious and are full of nutritious, healthy ingredients. We had the bleep test challenge where every class competed. The winner from every class then competed against each other. Our bleep test champion of all champions was Ayman from Venezuela Class who reached level 15 in the final. Our sports day were amazing; the sun shone and all our children proved what supportive and resilient sports stars they are. For KS1, Green Team were crowned the winners and for KS2 Yellow Team emerged victorious. A big well done to everyone who took part, we have some exceptional athletes amongst us.
Cooking in Espana

Health, Fun and Fitness Week has been great fun so far and on Wednesday we made pasta salads. There were a range of ingredients the class could choose to add to their pasta. We spoke a lot about quantity. We had a small amount of cheese and oil and that is good for us but too much is not! The children then wrote their instructions down in the style of a cookbook recipe and are very keen to make their pasta salads at home for their families to enjoy. Bon appetit!
Sports day in Reception

In Reception we have been learning about what makes a good team and how we can help support our friends to achieve our goals. At sports day we worked in teams together and took turns cheering on our friends as they practised a range of new skills.
Egyptian Masks in Mexico

As part of DT, Mexico class created ancient Egyptian masks by designing their templates, using Modroc to create texture and using gold and silver paint to make it stand out.
Health, Fun & Fitness week in Espana

Health, Fun and Fitness week got off to a great start with American Football over at the common. Espana were really good and worked well in their sports teams.

History Day

Yesterday, we celebrated history by finding out more about some very influential Londoners. We asked questions, made predictions, conducted research and presented our findings in a variety of ways. It was fantastic to see so many children dressing up as their favourite person from history.
STEM Challenge

Mexico class went to Heartlands High School to complete a STEM challenge. The STEM challenge was to create a filtration system to help us survive on a stranded desert island. We used a variety of materials such as cloth, a plastic bottle, carbon and pebbles. When we poured dirty water through our filtration system, we learned that the cloth was able to separate the big chunks of debris. The water that passed through was a light yellow. Finally, the last step to help eliminate bacteria was to boil it.
Haringey Poetry Competition

Our Year 6 students entered a poetry competition with Haringey Welcome alongside many other Haringey schools. These poems were based on welcoming refugees, asylum seekers and migrants to Wood Green and how they might feel arriving here. We are very excited to announce that Lilly Rodney won second prize. The following students were highly commended: Ruya Yasar, Aaliyah O'Brien, Kelvin Dervishi, Drishika Seegolam and Ayuub Said. The Tate Year 3 Project

The TATE Year 3 Project is a major new artwork, run by Steve McQueen, which will culminate in one of the most ambitious schools projects that London has ever seen. This project aims to photograph all Year 3 classes across London and will be displayed at the TATE Britain from November this year. Our two Year 3 classes took part in this today when they were photographed by a TATE Britain photographer. The idea is that the final display of all the photos will provide a picture of London’s pupils and celebrate our diversity. Hopefully, the classes will have the chance to visit the exhibition when they are in Year 4. You can read more about the project at www.tateyear3project.org.uk
Year 6 Trip to Bowling

On Friday year 6 had a well-deserved trip to the Rowans bowling to celebrate all their hard work during SATs week. Many strikes were scored and much fun was had by all. A big well done to all of our Year 6s for working so determinedly and being so focused. We are very proud of you.

Last Day of SATs

WE DID IT! It was such a shame to cover our lovely display boards for the exams, so before tearing down the plain paper we all wrote our names and messages saying a big 'Goodbye' to the SATs. Our classroom is colourful and cheerful again and we can get back to learning and getting ready for secondary school....eight weeks to go!
Argentina visit the Museum of London

With much excitement, the Roman Army that is Argentina Class marched to the Museum of London today! We saw all sorts of amazing things - mosaics, Roman coins, a Roman street with Roman shops and met a man called Brutus who wore a toga. Brutus talked to us about all things Roman including teaching us how to salute each other in Latin. One of us even got to be Emperor Julius Caesar. A great day of learning.
Bolivia Trip to The Museum of London

Year 3 visited the Museum of London to learn about the Romans. We saw a Roman solider, a street with shops, rooms in a Roman house, learnt about the food they ate and lots more!
Times Tables Rockstars in El Salvador

El Salvador have been rocking out on Rockstars in class this week. It has meant that Dejanique has improved her average answering time by over half a second! Make sure you are continuing to practice at home.
London Debate Mate Cup Final

A huge well done to our Debate Mate Team for reaching the London Debate Mate Cup Finals. Although they did not win, they debated maturely, articulately and oozed confidence. We are extremely proud of them.

Venezuela Pizza Express Trip

Venezuela class had a tiring yet exciting walk up the hill, past Alexandra Palace to go to Pizza Express as their class marble treat. We couldn't wait to make our pizzas but first we had to make the crust. The chef showed us how to flip our pizzas in the air to make them bigger! We used the following ingredients: cheese, tomato paste and basil leaves. Say, "CHEESE!" ( Get the joke?) Shay asked the chef if they would employ him and he could become "Employee of the Month". We made sure the outer edges of the crust were thicker. Elena was excited to show her dad her pizza. Luckily, the rain stopped so we took a slow walk back and stopped off at Alexandra Palace to eat our delicious pizzas.
Argentina Visit to The Natural History Museum

With great excitement, Argentina Class arrived at the Natural History Museum and we went straight into a show where we learnt all about earthquakes and volcanoes. Following that, we had a whirlwind tour of the Earthquake and Volcano exhibition and then we headed off to lunch. Next, we went to visit the Dinosaur exhibition and we got to see moving dinosaurs as well as a lot of skeletons of different dinosaurs. Finally, it was time to take the tube home. Some of us were exhausted so we took the opportunity for a quick nap. A great day of fun and learning!
Celebration Assembly Years 1,2 & 3

We had our end of term Celebration Assembly. We did our usual weekly celebrations - TT Rockstar certificates, Star of the Week certificates, giving out our Early Bird Owl for the class with the least lates and then the certificate for the class with the best attendance. We then moved on to celebrate all the children who have been at school every day this term - they all got a Bronze Certificate. And then some children even got a Silver Certificate - they haven't missed one day of school since September. Finally, we ended up with our favourite drum roll for the winner of prize for the person who has been at school every day since our assembly last week. What a lot to celebrate!
Year 3 Health Fair

Over the last three weeks, Year 3 have been working hard on an Enabling Enterprise project called 'Making Changes' where we devised and developed campaigns around different health issues. To celebrate and share our work, we held our Health Fair this morning. We started with an assembly to tell attendees about our different campaigns. This was then followed by attendees being allowed to come and visit our different campaign stalls where we could then persuade 'delegates' to join their campaigns. We very persuasive as we seemed to convert lots of people to our cause! Let's get healthy ... join us now!
Book Club Trip

Our Year 6 Book Club attended Alexandra Palace for this year's Haringey Book Club Award. They read the following books: Will You Catch Me? The Lost Magician, Tin, Kat Wolfe Investigates, Kick and Child I. They voted for their favourite author at the ceremony and even got their books signed! Latifah and Nora got to meet their favourite author , Lauren St John, who wrote Kat Wolfe Investigates. She even said she is going to send a copy of her latest book in the post for Latifah. The author (Jane Elson) of Nicole's favourite book, Will You Catch Me, won the award for "Book of the Year". Nicole was thrilled. Emilio loved reading "Will You Catch Me" by Jane Elson. He was so pleased when he found out she had won. The children were so delighted to have watched Michael Rosen perform some of his most famous poems.
Musical Showcase Years 1 & 2

We ended our week with a fabulously uplifting musical show from Years 1 and 2. Well done - some great performers among you - and an obvious love of all things musical. A joy to behold!
Musical Showcase Years 5 & 6

The main hall was packed today with performers, parents and carers and lots of musical instruments! A great feast of musical magic was had with the children showing their fantastic musical learning this term.
Music Club Performance

We had a great time watching our fabulous Thursday Music Club perform this week. A steel pan performance followed by a guitar ensemble with the children following music to play their piece. We were also treated to solo performances from some of the children. The children particularly enjoyed seeing their parents, carers and teachers trying to play the guitar.
Years 3 & 4 Musical Showcase

Today, we had the delightful opportunity to see what Years 3 and 4 have been learning in music this term. The afternoon started, and ended, with some fantastic singing. In the middle, we were treated to Year 3 performing on the glockenspiels and Year 4 performing on the ukeleles. We also had solo performances from two Year 3 boys - one on the steel pans and one singing - absolutely fantastic.
Argentina Class Getting Healthy

As part of the Design & Technology curriculum, we have been making healthy wraps. Here we are, following a recipe, and learning different food preparation techniques. You can see us busy chopping, peeling, slicing, grating and spreading. Then we got to eat it - yum, yum!
Music Club Performance

Our Tuesday music club gave us a treat tonight, showing off the skills they have learnt after school on Tuesday. We had a drumming performance, a guitar performance and were treated to solo performances by three children as well. A lovely way to spend a Tuesday afternoon. Thank you to all the parents for coming - and who even gave us a performance as well.
Cricket in Year 3

Argentina class had the chance to play some cricket last Friday. A coach from Highgate Cricket Club came to show us some skills. Much fun was had and we found some excellent bowlers and batters amongst us!

Our Tuesday music club gave us a treat tonight, showing off the skills they have learnt after school on Tuesday. We had a drumming performance, a guitar performance and were treated to solo performances by three children as well. A lovely way to spend a Tuesday afternoon. Learning about sound in Nicaragua

In Nicaragua, we have been learning all about sound. We put our knowledge to the test by creating our own musical instruments. Some of us made percussion instruments and some of us made string instruments. We decorated them to make them look even more incredible!
Reception Trip to Bekonscot Model Village

"Reception were very excited to set off on an educational visit that not only took them out of London but also back in time to see all kinds of amazing forms of transportation. We saw vehicles powered by people, engines and even animals! At Bekonscot Model Village we explored a miniature world which had all kinds of fascinating stories to tell. Since we have returned to school we have written a recount of our trip as a class: On Wednesday we went to Bekonscot Model Village. We went on a coach. Year 5 Trip to The Science Museum

Year 5 visited the Science Museum this half term. We visited the Wonderlab, where we took part in many interactive activities linked to Science; and we saw the film "A beautiful planet", which links to our current Humanities topic: Planet Earth, at the Imax. We loved the images of planet Earth from space; we were particularly impressed at the images of lightning from space. It was also amazing to learn what life on the International Space Station is like.

Argentina World Book Week

In Argentina Class, we love books. To celebrate World Book Week, we dressed up as lots of different characters from The Jungle Book and we also shared our favourite books from home.
Argentina Holiday Homework

Last Friday, we had the chance to share all our holiday homework: research on Pompeii, on what happens to volcanoes, posters about what to do if a volcano erupts and 3D models of volcanoes, some of which actually erupted. Amazing! Lots of fun and lots of learning.
Science in Mexico

In science, our new topic that we are learning about is sound. During our lesson, we explored how sound is made by playing a variety of instruments. Did you know that sound is created by vibration and travels in sound waves?
Y4 Natural History Museum Trip

On 27.02.19, we went to the Natural History Museum to learn more about teeth as part of our science unit. We handled real and replicas of skulls and teeth. We further identified the types of teeth (incisors, canines, molars and premolars) and located them using the skulls. After, we explored the museum and saw dinosaurs, insects, mammals and the human body.
Y4 Trip to The Natural History Museum

Nicaragua class visited the Natural History Museum to learn all about teeth. We discovered that carnivores, omnivores and herbivores all have different types of teeth depending on what they eat. For example, we looked at the teeth of a jaguar and found out that they have large canines which are needed to rip and tear meat. We enjoyed looking at all of the different animals and especially enjoyed meeting a Tyrannosaurus!
Y2 Trip to The National Gallery

On 27th February, Year 2 traveled to Trafalgar Square to visit the fourth plinth and The National Gallery. Before we went in to look at some fabulous art work, the children stopped off for a quick picture with the lion from Katie in London (a book we studied back in September). Sadly, it didn't come alive and take us on a tour of London. Inside the gallery, we looked at paintings called 'Lemons,' 'Earth' and the main piece we were there to see: 'Surprised' by Henri Rousseau. The children had a great time and we so lucky with the weather!
Y1 Police Visit

Year 1 MET police visit Year 1 had a visit from PC Charlotte and PC Graham, as part of their PSHCE topic. PC Charlotte and PC Graham discussed their roles in our community and how they help and support us. Some children got to try on their uniform and Mrs Beare was handcuffed (luckily she has been allowed free).
Art at Alexandra

Our wonderful art is being celebrated in the school. Year 3 have produced mixed media collages based on Tudor portraits on Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I. Year 5's oil painting on canvases, based on the 'still life' work of Paul Cezanne are now hung. Finally, Year 6's mural in chalk, based on the work of Mexican artist Diego Rivera, are now on the walls for all to enjoy. What amazing artists we have at our school!
Colombia Assembly

Colombia Class produced a fabulous assembly, showcasing their learning about Florence Nightingale, Animals including humans and some maths. They were so loud and clear and we are all very proud of them. Well done, Colombia!
Year 4 Science

The Year 4's have learned about the digestive system. We learned that digestion begins in the mouth. Food travels down to the oesophagus, then to the stomach. Inside the stomach, food get mushed up. Next, the food travels to the small intestine, then to the large intestine and anything that the body cannot absorb ends up in the toilet. We used a variety of items as part of practical activity to construct the digestive system and to observe how it works.
Year 4 trip to St. Paul the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church

The Year 4s went to St. Paul the Baptist Greek Orthodox church to learn more about the Christian faith. We looked at what a church looked like inside and asked the priest questions. Letia - I asked the priest, "Where is God in all the pictures on the wall?" He responded by saying that, "God is not in pictures because he is a spirit that we feel all around us." Isaac- "I loved how bright the church was." Maria - "I learned about the church paintings and that they were created 23 years ago. " Khadija - "I learned that although we come from different religious, there are common beliefs such as respecting others, showing integrity and loving our family." Claudia - "The priest told us that the chandeliers and candle holders were all made of gold."
Science in Nicaragua

In science, we classified different animals based on their teeth. We classified them into three groups: carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. Carnivores have sharp canines and incisors so they can rip and tear food. Herbivores have large molars so they can chew their food. Omnivores have a mixture of both because they eat meat, vegetables and fruit.
Year 5 Toga Party

Year 5 had a Toga Party to celebrate their topic on Ancient Greece. We danced along to Greek instrumental music, ate dried fruit and made warrior shields.
Alexandra Primary Choir at the O2

On Tuesday 5th February, our choir went to the O2 to perform in the Young Voices Concert, the largest children's choir in the world. Participating in such an amazing venue, with different artists, was a fantastic experience for all of us. Some views from the children were: Sriya: "I liked that we got to sing with many children and the arena looked beautiful." Scarlett: "I liked the lights and the songs." Ashton: "I loved the singing, and watching the dancing." Nicole: "It was fun and we got to sing." Catarina: "I liked joining up with other schools and singing together." Angel: "I liked how everyone was friendly and we got to sing with other people."

STEM Week

There were many exciting challenges from creating hand washing devices to floating gardens being tackled across the school by our very own engineers. Pupils planned, designed, evaluated and improved their model as a team.

Argentina - Classifying Coins

Argentina Class carried on finding out about magnets by sorting coins in class this week. We worked as pairs to sort coins according to whether they were magnetic or not. We observed that some 1p and 2p coins were magnetic and some were non-magnetic.
Argentina - Looking for Treasure!

Year 3 are studying 'Forces and Magnets' in Science. Last week, we discovered the power of magnets by using them to search for 'treasure' in our boxes of sand. We discovered all the different things we could find by using our super strong magnets. Soon, we are going to be sorting out coins to find out which coins are magnetic and which are not.
Argentina - Trip to The Charterhouse

Argentina Class enjoyed a Tudor workshop at The Charterhouse on Friday 25th February. What an experience! First, we explored a long tunnel, discovering that monks had once lived there. Then, we went into the fine dining room and looked at the fancy decor. Next, we went upstairs to the great hall, tried on different costumes and did some Tudor dancing. Finally, we were able to explore artefacts from the Tudor times. A great day.
Rugby Competition

On Friday 18th January our rugby team took part in a prestigious competition held at Finsbury Barracks. This was an invitation only event and our team performed fantastically. Well done to all those involved!
El Salvador - Trip to London Zoo

On Thursday 24th January Year 6 took a trip to London Zoo. Despite the rain, we all had a fantastic time learning about classifying animals and seeing lots of new animals as we walked around the zoo. We even had the chance to meet and stroke Pumpkin the rat!
Bolivia - Trip to The Charterhouse

Last Thursday, Year 3 visited The Charterhouse. This used to be a monastery before Henry 8th shut it down in 1545. We learnt so many new facts about The Tudor period, visited a Tudor dining room, dressed in costumes, and saw the original monastery wall. After we got to handle lots of artefacts from the Tudor period and guess what they were. We had a great day!
Espana - Trip to London Zoo

It may have been cold. It may have been raining but that did not stop Espana class from exploring and enjoying the zoo on Thursday 24th January. We had so much fun!

In Design and Technology, we have been turning egg boxes into our very own moving monsters. We designed our mysterious creatures and used paint to bring them to life. Next, we used a balloon, some tape and rubber bands to make them move. We are very proud of our creations.
Christmas Carol Concert

The KS2 children were in fine voice this afternoon at our annual Christmas Carol Concert. We enjoyed a great afternoon of music and singing.
Winter Celebration

The Winter Celebration was a great success: we sung Christmas songs, we made cards, we ate mince pies and we had a special guest appearance from a dancing Father Christmas.

Christmas Carols at Palace Gates

Alexandra Primary choir wowed the residents at Palace Gate Gardens Supported Housing last Tuesday, singing a variety of Christmas Carols. As usual, the choir were accompanied and conducted by Ken, our fabulous music teacher. The audience joined in with our singing and even led us in a rendition of 'Little Drummer Boy'. Rose, pictured, had organised refreshments for us all and these were much appreciated after half an hour of singing. It was a delightful morning, full of good cheer. We are very proud of our choir of up to 30 pupils who come early every Tuesday morning to practice with Ken. Well done our choir!
Preparing for Nativity in Reception

Creativity knows no bounds in Reception Classes at Alexandra. We have been making our very own backdrop for our nativity. We used blue, black, gold and yellow to paint it and then we finally added some glitter. We can't wait for everyone to see it.
Musical Showcase

Our Music Club musicians have been entertaining us this week, celebrating the end of Music Club for this year. They were also joined by individuals who were able to showcase their musical talent. As well as ukeleles, violins, piano and steel drums, we were lucky enough to be given a rock performance on electric guitars. Wow! What a talented lot we are. If anyone is interested in joining Music Club, it will be starting again after half term. It runs on Tuesday or a Thursday from 3.30 - 4.30pm. Please let the office know you if you are interested.
Mayan Workshop in Year 6

On Monday 26th November, Year 6 took part in an interactive Mayan workshop. We learnt, explored and experienced different aspects of the Mayan life. We were able to dress up and step into the shoes of the Maya people, even tasting some of their chocolate (which was definitely not as delicious as our modern day Dairy milk!) All children thoroughly enjoyed the day and taking part in such an engaging and immersive experience.
Alexandra Primary Supporting the Unicef Shoeshare Campaign

On Friday 16th November 2018 The Steering Committee launched the Unicef Shoeshare Campaign. As a school we are aiming to collect as many unwanted shoes as we can, to donate to Unicef. They are working in partnership with Clarks shoes to ensure that all children get access to a good education. So far we have collected over 100 pairs of shoes. When the campaign ends on 14th December, the Steering Committee will deliver the shoes directly to Clarks.
Mayan Workshop in Year 6

On Monday Year 6 had fun packed Mayan themed day. We learnt to speak some Mayan (can you remember the numbers 1-10?) dressed in Mayan clothes and looked at artifacts. In the afternoon we did some role play and took part in 'Are you Smarter than a Mayan' quiz. We also managed to fit in some writing. It was a fantastic day!
Science in Argentina

Argentina had lots of fun in our science last week as we investigated light and darkness using dark boxes. We created our darkboxes from shoeboxes by painting their insides black and blocking any holes where light could get in. We then controlled the amount of light coming in by using opaque and translucent materials across a hole in the lid so we could investigate what kind of objects we could see. Our conclusions were that shiny objects were easier to see as their surface reflected the light back into our eyes better than dark, matt surfaces. Very enlightening!
Science in Nicaragua

In Nicaragua class, we investigated melting points by choosing three different materials to test. We used a thermometer to test the melting point of chocolate, butter and ice. We discovered that raising the temperature speeds up the process for all three materials. Which of these materials do you think has the highest melting point?
Year 1 Trip to The London Islamic Cultural Society and Mosque

Year 1 went on a trip to The London Islamic Cultural Society and Mosque. We heard from the Imam of the Mosque, who told us about its history and why it is so important to Muslims in the area.
Health Workshop in KS2

Years 4, 5 and 6 took part in a health workshop this morning. In the hall there were lots of interactive stations set up with activities and questions regarding our health. Did you know the brain is made up of 90% water? Fill up that water bottle! In the afternoon Years 5 and 6 had a fitness workshop. Some of the stations included: boxing, trampolines, balance boards and hurdles. Can you balance and squat at the same time. Well done KS 2 we are leading from the front showing everyone what it means to be a healthy school.
Anti Bullying Week in Puerto Rico

For Anti-Bullying Week, Puerto Rico discussed how we can make sure that none of us have to deal with bullying but, if we do, how we would deal with it. We made up our own role-plays and some of us acted them out in front of the class. We say no to bullies!
The Big Draw in Year 5

Puerto Rico and Venezuela enjoyed the big doodle and making marble art during the Big Draw.
Science Presentation in KS1

KS1 pupils had an entertaining and educational workshop about chemical reactions with a scientist named Dr. Andrew. Pupils used their working scientifically skills such as observing, predicting, asking questions and making conclusions to explain what was happening.
Parents Workshop

On 1/11/18 there was a science workshop held at Wood Green Common about exploring nature and seasons as part of the science curriculum. A fantastic turnout of parents and pupils investigated patterns, classified objects and learnt that science is all around us. Please see the attached hand-out for more detail about how we can use our scientific skills to learn more about nature and seasons.
String Art in Mexico

The theme of The Big Draw is play and we did string art. Students explored using a variety of paint colours, string and peg to create an explosion of art of which is similar to the famous artist named Jackson Pollock.
Anti Bullying Week - Starts Monday 12th November 2018

Next Monday starts Anti Bullying Week at Alexandra Primary School. The theme is "Choose respect." On Monday 12th November we are joining in with a national "Odd Socks" event to celebrate that everyone is unique and different. Please help your child to choose odd socks for the day. We hope this will help us spread a serious message in a fun way.Throughout the week children will be discussing respect and tolerance and thinking about how to be a good friend.
The Big Draw in Year 3

Last week we took part in the Big Draw. This year the theme was play. On Monday, we took part in a class doodle. We found it very relaxing and enjoyed being creative. On Friday, we created collages and our parents/carers came to help us. We let them doodle too!

We did an experiment looking at different materials and discussing whether they would be suitable for making curtains. We used torches to find out if the material was opaque, translucent or transparent.
The Big Draw

Alexandra Primary has been particularly creative this week as we have been taking part in The Big Draw Festival. Activities have included chalk drawing in the playground, a big class doodle with the focus on play and also parents and carers have come in to participate in class sessions focused on being creative through play. "I love The Big Draw. It allows me lots of time to be creative. In my doodle, I've drawn all the things that I loved to play and do. Art is one of them."

International Evening

International Evening was held on Thursday 18th October. We ate lots of delicious food made by our families, listening to the choir and Puerto Rico sing and children play the steel pan drums. Some children made flags and others had their face painted. A great time was had by all, celebrating our community. Thank you to all that came to support this event, donated food and filled in our feedback questionnaire.
